Originally envisioned by Montreal Locomotive Works in the early 1970s, the HRC series was not actually built until 1982, after the company was acquired by Bombardier Transportation. While only hood units of this locomotive were purchased (All by CN), the HR-412 was also offered with a traditional side-door cowl and as a "Draper-Taper" similar to the HR-616. The HR-412 was among the last locomotives built to be powered by ALCO's 251 engine; after the unsatisfactory sales performance of the HR series, Bombardier divested itself of the traditional locomotive business and sold the patents for the 251 to General Electric.
