The GP9 was EMD's second model in the iconic "General Purpose" series, succeeding the GP7 in 1954. Like its Carbody Unit and 6-motor counterparts, the GP9's improved 567C prime mover developed an additional 250 Horsepower over the GP7. The GP9 performed exceptionally well in the North American market, selling over 4,000 units to a myriad of railroads. The GP9 was succeeded by the GP18 and GP20 in 1959.
