The GP7 was introduced in 1949 as the first locomotive in EMD's famous General Purpose (GP) series. Learning from their previous offering, the BL2, EMD cut away enough of the carbody to allow full-length walkways on either side, similar to how most switcher locomotives were set up. The GP7 was marketed for road freight service as well as switching, with options for steam generators and gearing up to 89 mph for passenger service. It was succeeded by the GP9 in 1954.
