The GP40-2 is the Dash 2 line successor to the popular GP40. Featuring a modified traction motor blower duct and new modular electronics, it still had the original turbocharged V16 645 engine that helped to create a reliable locomotive that is still used on Class 1s to this day. The GP40-2 was one of the widest selling locomotives to 27 railroads, and sold 1143 units between 1972 and 1986. The GP40-2 was replaced by the GP50 in 1980.

In 1974, Southern Pacific purchased 3 GP40P-2 locomotives, fitted with steam generators and and extended carbody that pushed the rear hood to the end of the frame (in a very similar fashion to the GP40P.) These locomotives were used in commuter service in San Francisco, before eventually having all steam equipment removed and being put into freight service. Two remain with Union Pacific, while one is with Indiana Harbor Belt.
