The GP39-2 is the improved brother to the turbocharged V12 645 series GP39, and featured all new improvements much like the other "Dash 2" lineups. With a new traction motor blower duct, modular electronics, and a now standard AR10 AC alternator (compared to the former D32 DC generator), the GP39-2 was released to the market in 1974, before being pulled in 1984.
Also like the GP39, the GP39-2 did not necessarily sell majorly. Despite ten years of production, only 239 units were made, with 106 belonging to ATSF alone. In comparison, the GP38-2 was able to sell nearly 10 times as many units (2,222). These numbers made it the third-lowest produced 645 line model, only beating the SW1000 and SD38, being the lowest with 119 and 108 respectively.
