The GP38-2 locomotive was the new and improved upgrade to the GP38. Much like the other "Dash 2" lineups, various upgrades included a new AR10 AC alternator (compared to the former D32 DC generator) that had been implemented after tests on the GP38AC, modular electronics, and a reworked traction motor blower duct.

Beginning in January of 1972 until July of 1986, this non-turbocharged V16-645 series diesel offering had 2,222 examples built for railroads in the United States, Canada, and Mexico; many still serve railroads today, with some still employed by their original Class 1 purchasers.
