ooh, shiny

The GP35 debuted from EMD in July of 1963, and was built by EMD and Canadian subsidiary GMDD until January of 1966. The GP35 series featured a new carbody (without the hump in the cab the GP30 was famous for) which became the the basis for all future GP hood units, and all SD units up to the SD70.

The GP35 and SD35 represented EMD's 567 and its associated equipment at its absolute limit; 2500 HP was the most power EMD could squeeze out of the 567 block and the DC generators used in both units needed a large amount of transition steps to handle the power output of the motor. Within the course of two-and-a-half years of production, 1251 units were built. The GP35 was replaced by the GP40 in December of 1965.

Due to EMD trade-in programs, some GP35s rode on older style Blomberg trucks from retired EMD F units and some rode on AAR Type B trucks from ALCO RS units (see note 1).

Notes:

(1): Some GP35s rode on traded in AAR Type B trucks; the following numbers would reflect the donor locomotive: Max TM Current, Max Continuous TM Current.

(2): Although listed as Electrical Blowers, they behave like Mechanical Blowers in PT2. All dynamic brake fans use a DC motor powered by tapping the grids, and engine RPM increases when the traction motors need cooling.

(3) Number 6 or 24RL were optional.
