The EMD GP18 was an improved version of the GP9, utilizing a 16 cylinder 567D1 engine rated at 1800 horsepower. The GP18 was released concurrently to the GP20, establishing the concept of cataloging a turbocharged and roots-blown version of essentially the same locomotive, a practice which EMD continued for over 10 years.
Production ran from December of 1959 to November of 1963, with 405 units produced. An oddball group among this number was 100 of Missouri Pacific's units, which rode on AAR Type B trucks from traded-in ALCO FA-1, and FA-2 locomotives.
