The EMD F7 locomotive was a 1,600 upgrade to the EMD F3 in the F-unit series (A series of 4 axle, streamlined freight locomotives). The F7 was the best selling type in the F-unit class, with 3856 (2,393 cab-equipped A units and 1,463 cabless B units) locomotives being made between February 1949 and December 1953. While most of these locomotives were in freight service, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad used A-B-B-A sets on passenger trains.

The F7 was later surpassed by the F9 series in 1953
