The F59PH is a commuter/passenger locomotive (some would say in sucession to the F40PH) that is equippped with a 12 cylinder 710 engine. However, unlike the F40PH, this locomotive utilizes an external HEP generator (as far as can be seen, this HEP generator is a Caterpillar 3412)

The start for this unit comes from the Toronto-based GO Transit, who pioneered orders for this locomotive to replace their aging and diverse fleet to a standardized unit. GO Transit, working with EMD, eventually made the cowl-styled unit, equipped with a wide cab that was popular with Canadian railroads at the time. Initially, GO Transit was the only purchaser, but the recently started Los Angeles commuter railroad Metrolink soon was interesed in orders as well.

A total of 72 units were made for GO Transit (49 units) and for Metrolink (23). Most have since been retired from both railroads, and have found new lives on other commuter railroads like Trinity Railway Express in the Dallas-Ft Worth area of Texas, Metra around Chicago, Montreal's EXO, and North Carolina's Piedmont (a short service, state run passenger train from Raleigh to Charloette, NC)

Some remaining Metrolink units have recently (Oct 2024) been turned in for Tier 4 credit units, which means that their prime movers and HEP generators must be disabled with a hole in the side of the block. These locomotives likely will be scrapped as they would need an engine swap to maintain usability.
