The SW1000 was the direct replacement to the SW900 (and, by proxy, the SW600). Offered as a lighter duty SW1500, the SW1000 sold substantially less than it's bigger sister at a measly 119 produced. Like the other switchers before it, the SW1000 served well beyond it's original purchasers lifetimes, with several enduring second careers. It was never replaced; EMD decided there was no need for a lower horsepower switcher model when the SW line was replace by the MP and discontinued the model without a successor.

Of note is the SW1001, a special version of the SW1000 equipped with a similar cab and stature to the 567 line of switchers. Meant for use on tighter clearance lines, this model sold slightly better at 230 for both North America and the export market. It continued to be produced for the export market into the 1990's, well toward the end of 645-powered locomotive production.

(1): The SW1000 could also be ordered with Flexicoil trucks, making it more suitable for road switching. This allowed for higher tops speeds; 50 or 65 MPH, depending on the gearing.
