The DD35 is an 8 axle locomotive variant of the GP35 and SD35. The Dual Diesel 35 series (DD35) locomotive used two turbocharged 567 engines, and each one powered one 4 axle truck (essentially like a GP35 in each truck assembly). These locomotives, designed to compete with the C855 and U50, were made for longer and faster freight trains, primarily on the Union Pacific. However, Southern Pacific also was interested in the double diesel concept, and purchased DD35s as well. DD35s were cabless booster units, and designed to compliment other locomotives on freight trains.

The DD35A locomotive was a DD35 locomotive type exclusively for Union Pacific, and had a cab put on one end. Together, DD35s and DD35As were made between 1963 to 1965. 3 DD35 cabless locomotives went to the Southern Pacific railroad, while the other 27 DD35 and 15 DD35A locomotives went to the Union Pacific.

The DD35A was later superseded by the DDA40X, and was going to be surpassed by the DD40A that was never built.
