The DASH 9-40C (C40-9) and its widecab variant, the DASH 9-40CW (C40-9W), is a 4000 horsepower mainline freight locomotive built by GE Transportation. It's a derated version of the DASH 9-44CW (C44-9W) with an optional standard cab or comfort cab. All models were purchased by Norfolk Southern and totaled 125 standard cab builds and 1,090 widecab builds.
The C40-9W is visually identical to the C44-9W; the only differences lie within the computer controls for output.
Norfolk Southern believed at the time of purchase that a derated locomotive would be more reliable and fuel efficient; NS has since changed their philosophy, and have changed the computer controls on all wide cabs to output 4400 horsepower, citing no significant difference from a normal Dash 9. Standard cabs C40-9s have since been rebuilt between 2016-2018 into AC traction wide cabs with improved emissions compliance.

Notes
⚠: Not Verified or Educated Guess
(1) Horsepower output is electronically controlled and can be increased to 4400 when needed. Listed horsepower for traction is 3990, earlier it was listed at 3965. Gross HP is 4100.
(2) Could also be ordered with a Self-Steering truck, which would supposedly reduce wear on the wheels.
(3) Ratings from an ES44DC. They both share 752AH traction motors. Despite what sources say, the B13B is not a DC motor and as such was not used on the C40-9s. The B13 series are AC traction motors.
(4) All locomotives also feature an automatic starter inside the cab.
