The C636 was introduced in late 1967 as a response to EMD's SD45. Producing 3600 horsepower with four fewer cylinders and featuring high adhesion trucks, it had many advantages over its competitor. However, it would turn out to be the last new locomotive Alco would design before Worthington forced Alco out of the locomotive market.
