The C30-7A is, for all intents and purposes, a very late production C30-7. They were built on request by Conrail for a more fuel efficient 3000 horsepower unit; while the C30-7 itself was more cost effective than the SD40-2, GE's uprating of their V12 FDL and associated tractive improvments lent itself to a remarkably fuel efficient locomotive. Further, being end-of-production units, they are identifiable by being phase 2d across the board in addition to the six hood doors per side. Production was one year only, in 1984, with Conrail being the sole buyer of the 50 units. Being end of production units, they were equipped with the same modernized alternator as the C36-7 and thus utilized generator transition.

⚠: Not Verified or Educated Guess

(1) C30-7As were offered with various trucks classified as FB-3; Adirondac and GSC castings with various mountings for brake cylinders or clasp brakes could be found. Otherwise, the difference was cosmetic.

(2) Electrically blown dynamics were offered as an upgrade kit from GE.
