What is a Gas Station?

A gas station, also known as petrol station or filling station, is a facility that sells fuel and engine lubricants - most commonly gasoline and diesel fuel - for motor vehicles.

Self Service: Pumping Gas on Your Own

Pumping Gas with a Bank Card

  1. Locate the gas tank on your car.
  2. Pull up to any available self-service pump, ensuring that the gas pump is on the same side as your gas tank and within reach of your car.
  3. Turn off the ignition.
  4. Put out any cigarettes that might cause a fire hazard around the gas and leave your cellphone in the car. Cell static has been linked to several gas station flare-ups.
  5. Step out of your car.
  6. Swipe your credit or debit card and provide a PIN number or zip code if requested. Some machines will prompt you to enter an amount. If you enter 100 ILS, the pump will cut off the gas when you've pumped 100 ILS worth. If you want to fill your tank, just press enter to skip this step.
  7. Enter your identifying details - license plate number, identification and / or passport number - as instructed.
  8. Once your details have been approved, access your gas tank either manually or using a button inside your car to do so.
  9. Once the gas cap is exposed, unscrew it.
  10. Remove the gas nozzle and insert it securely into the gas tank opening.
  11. Select an appropriate grade of gasoline. On most gas pumps, you'll be able to select between three grades of gasoline, based on their octane rating: premium, mid-grade or regular. To determine the most-appropriate octane for your vehicle, consult the owner's manual of your vehicle. Unless your car has a high-powered engine (such as a sports car or a large SUV), fill your car with regular gas.
  12. Once the pump is activated, pull the nozzle’s trigger, allowing the gas to flow out of the hose and into your fuel tank. On most pumps, you can lock the trigger to let the gas flow continuously. The pump will automatically shut off when the tank is full or when you have been charged the amount for which you pre-paid, whichever happens first. You'll hear a click when the tank is full or when the machine cuts it off.
  13. Carefully remove the nozzle when the machine stops pumping gas, to avoid spilling. Return the nozzle to the pump.
  14. You may be asked if you want a receipt. If you choose yes, take it.
  15. Recap your gas tank, then close the door to the gas tank.
  16. You may be asked if you want a receipt. If you choose yes, take it.
  17. Turn on the ignition and drive off.
