LAUNCHING DEVICE
INTRODUCTION :
NEED STATEMENT: Frisbee Launching Machine.
Plan and design a launching machine that can launch frisbees of standard size.
Frisbee, is a low-contact team sport played with a flying disc (Frisbee). Ultimate was developed in 1968 by a group of students at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. Although Frisbee resembles many traditional sports in its athletic requirements, it is unlike most sports due to its focus on self-officiating, even at the highest levels of competition.
The purpose of the Frisbee launching machine is to provide consistency and practice with accuracy.
Frisbee is recognized by International Olympic Committee; eligible for the 2024 Olympics.
So the athlete can practice throwing Frisbee without anyone’s help using the Frisbee launcher machine.
DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS :
1.Launch frisbee using potential energy:-
A catapult is a ballistic device used to launch a projectile a great distance without the aid of gunpowder or other propellants – particularly various types of ancient and medieval siege engines. A catapult uses the sudden release of stored potential energy to propel its payload. Most convert tension or torsion energy that was more slowly and manually built up within the device before release, via springs, bows, twisted rope, elastic, or any of numerous other materials and mechanisms.
2.Launch using motors :-
A servo motor was tasked with pushing the frisbees out of a hopper made from a tin coffee can and towards the DC motor, while a planetary gear and linear actuator positioned the launcher horizontally and vertically, respectively. The motor spins the frisbee through the flywheel hence the frisbee gains the required kinetic energy with which it shoots outside.
COMPONENTS REQUIRED :-
1.Discs
2.Motor(12VDC 5310 RPM brushed motor).
3.Power Supply for Motor: A 12V 20A power supply.
4.Repair/replacement 3 prong power cable.
5.Flywheel.
6.ply-wood: 4’ x 4’ x 1/4” or ½.
7.Arduino Uno set with a breadboard.
8.Extra wire. ( 4 different colors should be enough).
9.1 diode.
10.1 2.2KΩ resistor.
11.1 TIP 120 Transistor.
12.9V battery adapter for the Uno.
13.9V battery.
14.1 WiiChuck adapter for Arduino. (if required)
15.1 Wii Nunchuck. (if required)
16.LED lights.
Apart from these materials, some basic materials like :
1.soldering iron and solder
2.electrical tape
3.electric drill
4.wood screws (1/2”)
-
drill bit set for wood
-
machine screws (to match mounting holes on motor)
-
5-minute epoxy
-
Multimeter
SL NO | COMPONENTS OR PARTS | MECHANISM/WORKING | LINKS |
---|---|---|---|
1. | MOTOR | The motor speed needs to be around 5000 RPM to get good rotation on the disc as it exits the chute | http://www.robotshop.com/en/12v5310-rpm-cim-brushed-dc-motor.html |
2. | ARDUINO | It has some user-friendly features, including large 2.54mm pitched sockets for connecting to external devices, an onboard LED, inbuilt power handling (such as an external DC power jack), and a large USB B connector for connecting to a PC. | https://www.adafruit.com/products/170 |
3. | FLYWHEEL | Flywheel, heavy wheel attached to a rotating shaft so as to smooth out delivery of power from a motor to a machine | https://www.adafruit.com/product/167 |
4. | 9V BATTERY&9V ADAPTER | To supply power to the Arduino we require 9V battery and 9V adapter. | https://www.instructables.com/Desktop-Frisbee-Launcher-With-Wii-Nunchuck/ |
5. | BREAD BOARD | To connect switches, regulators etc. | https://www.adafruit.com/products/170 |
6. | LED LIGHTS | Blinks and indicates that the frisbee is launched. | https://www.amazon.in |
7. | PUSH BUTTON | To initiate the launching of frisbee. | https://www.amazon.in |
HINTS AND IDEAS :
- We could use push-to-on switches that are handy in nature and also more efficient and give aesthetic look.
- We can also make RC(Remote Controlled) instead of the manual Launcher if we are planning to launch the frisbee by using Estes Launch Controller . We can control the whole setup by just using a remote and pressing its center button to launch.
- Now instead of using the conventional Cardboard to support the wheels which would end up using a lot of glue because of the weight of the DC motors, we can use Bamboo Sticks(Hollow or Bulk) that are also lightweight and also support the weight of DC motors while they are rotating.
COST ESTIMATION :
SL NO. | COMPONENTS | PRICE |
---|---|---|
1. | Discs | =Rs.100 |
2. | Motor(12VDC 5310 RPM brushed motor) | =Rs.385 |
3. | Power Supply for Motor: A 12V 20A power supply | ---- |
4. | Repair/replacement 3 prong power cable | =Rs.249 |
5. | Flywheel | =Rs.100 |
6. | ply-wood: 4’ x 4’ x 1/4” or ½ | =Rs.399 |
7. | Extra wire. ( 4 different colors should be enough) | =Rs.40 |
8. | Arduino | =Rs.499 |
9. | 1 diode | =Rs.59 |
10. | 1 2.2KΩ resistor | =Rs.10 |
