Archetype: The Inventor - LunarNeil/Call-of-Cthulhu-Campaign GitHub Wiki
The Archetypal Inventor is a clever creator, able to unify the world of the material reality and the realm of the imagined possibility. They expand the frontiers of human understanding, imagining worlds outside what we can see and touch, and open their mind to infinite possibilities. When groundbreaking work reveals troubling truth about the universe the Inventor is forced to accept the burden of that terrible knowledge and seek to control what they have discovered.
The defining characteristic of an Inventor Archetype is their dangerous creativity. They can be artists, philosophers, doctors, or engineers, but in every situation it is their thoughts that are dangerous. Inventors can be reckless or cautious, but the inevitable result of their continued work is unavoidable disaster.
Their Archetypal struggle characterizes the fear of progress and change, often expressed by others in reference to the inventor's work. The inventor is often overly confident in their own abilities, or unaware of the risk posed by others seeking to copy their work with less regard. Inventors will commonly tap into forces believed beyond human control to make their creations work, or exceed the ethical restraints placed upon them by society, which acts as the catalyst for turning a small and safe thought into a revolutionary and dangerous thought.
Inventors are great Archetypes for players that are looking to play someone a little crazy without causing their group an excess of problems. Inventors create things that they are often required to destroy, however, allowing them to be useful protagonists while also the root cause of everything wrong going on.
