How do Creatures Work? - LuketheName56/creatures-of-the-night GitHub Wiki

Sanity

The "creatures of the night" include every creature that lives in the cave, where most of the game takes place. Some of these creatures have maintained their sanity, while others have not. Creatures who have maintained almost full sanity, you can talk to. Creatures with some sanity left will only attack if provoked, and those with none left will actively hunt you. The most corrupted are often bosses. Creatures in isolation are more likely to be insane, while those in clusters are usually friendly.

Light

Areas have varying levels of light. In some the player has a natural glow, others it is pitch black besides the light from the eye. As you get to darker areas of the cave, there are more corrupt enemies. You meet less friendly npcs and more "monsters".

Seeing

It is possible to gauge how sane a creature is later in the game. The sanity will be indicated by the amount their orb glows in Sanity Vision. This is not correlated to the color/brightness of the orb in normal vision.

Binding

When you defeat a creature, you take the orb that kept them alive with you. However, you cannot immediately use the orb for your own purposes. Orbs are formed with the creature they are bound to. This binding to an individual creature means orbs must go through a transformation in order for them to be used as healing, weaponry items, etc. In order for this transformation to occur, the creature you defeated and the person carrying the orb must have a common desire. Only then may it be re-bound. The shopkeeper, who you often exchange with in the beginning, has the common desire with all the other creatures to escape.

Other

The orb in Extremity, the one that fractured your mind, allows anyone to use it who wishes to protect Extremity.

Boss idea:

The path leading to the boss is filled with notes he left behind. Tells a story of someone getting lost and separated from the group, then slowly going insane from the darkness and isolation. You finally meet the corrupted creature and.. is he beyond saving?
