It seems that the Snellen Test was used to measure eye acuity. This exam has the child stand 20 feet away from an eye chart (example below) and are asked to read out letters at different lines of the chart. Their accuracy in calling out the letters determines their score. A 20/20 indicates a person can see an object from 20 feet away (numerator) that most people can see from 20 feet away (denominator). A 20/10 indicates a person can see an object from 20 feet away (numerator) that most people can see from 10 feet away, thus this means their vision is better because they can see from farther away. A 20/200 indicates a person can see an object from 20 feet away (numerator) that most people can see from 200 feet away, thus this means their vision is poor because they can see something only by being close to it.

Using the chart below as en example, those above the green line would probably have seeing problems and those below the red line have really good vision.
