Instead of the time, why am I seeing "Searching signal..."?

This is because you are too far away from a diamond generator or an emerald generator.

When you are far from the generators, HBW Helper cannot read the text shown above the generators, nor can it obtain the time until the next generation from the text.

When you approach a generator, this message would be replaced by the time. More specifically, if you could see the text above the generator with OptiFine's zoom-in feature, HBW Helper would be able to get the time, too.

Does this feature make HBW Helper a hack?

Only Hypixel has the right to say what is a disallowed hack on their server and what is not. However, here is my argument that it is not a hack.

The "Allowed Modifications" page on Hypixel website states the general guideline of disallowed modification as "modification that provides an unfair advantage". Displaying the generation times on the screen seems unfair to other players who have not installed this mod; however, this feature is just showing information that you can get via other ways directly in a convenient method, and it will not show the information if you cannot get it in any other way.

Playing a Minecraft mini-game does not tolerate idling even for a moment: when you are checking out stuffs in your inventory, an enemy can rush you and gain advantage in PvP by damaging you when you are not prepared. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to open up the inventory screen, merely to see what status effects you have, because if you are in Hypixel, they are not displayed on the top-right corner of the HUD. So, people would install a mod to display information that takes some time to obtain, such as armor and status effects, directly on the HUD, making checking the information fast and convenient. The "Allowed Modifications" page permits using HUD mods showing armor and effect status.

The purpose of this feature is quite similar to showing armor and status effects information on the HUD. You get the generation time by reading the text above a generator, which requires you to aim your current view towards the generator. If you cannot see it clearly because you are far away from the generator and the text is too small, you could use OptiFine's zoom-in feature. OptiFine is explicitly permitted by Hypixel and can be used for free, so every player can use it, ruling out unfairness. In other words, every player can check the generation times in an allowed but relatively time-consuming method. HBW Helper shows this information to you on the HUD, so you do not need to manually locate the text above a generator; similarly, armor and effects HUD shows information that was only available in the inventory screen to you on the HUD, so you do not need to manually open and close your inventory.

When you are too far away from a generator to see the text above it in any way, HBW Helper would not report its generation time either, so you still do not know the time and are not benefited from any unfair advantage. There are some instances where the generation time of a generator that seems too far away is reported, but in these instances, the text above the generator can still be seen if you try hard:

If you are still concerned, but you still want to use other features of this mod, you can turn this feature off in HBW Helper settings.

Should you still worry that turning it off is insufficient, you may even choose to remove this feature by modifying this mod's source code; if your programming skills are not strong enough, you can ask a skilled programmer to do it on your behalf. This mod is free software, which means you have the freedom to change how it works.
