This page is dedicated to all tools that are not related to any kind of social network that we have covered so far (or all of them together). These tools vary from web-based application to tools that need a local installation. This list is not in any specific order. All tools you find in this list have been tested. If you still face any problems with the tools bellow, make sure to add an issue to our repository. It helps us to maintain this list.

Zeeschuimer

Zeeschuimer is a browser extension that monitors internet traffic while you are browsing a social media site, and collects data about the items you see in a platform's web interface for later systematic analysis. Its target audience is researchers who wish to systematically study content on social media platforms that resist conventional scraping or API-based data collection.

You can, for example, browse TikTok and later export a list of all posts you saw in the order you saw them in. Data can be exported as a JSON file or exported to a 4CAT instance for analysis and storage. Zeeschuimer is primarily intended as a companion to 4CAT, but you can also integrate its output into your own analysis pipeline.

Minet

minet is a webmining command line tool & library for python (>= 3.7) that can be used to collect and extract data from a large variety of web sources such as raw webpages, Facebook, CrowdTangle, YouTube, Twitter, Media Cloud etc. It adopts a very simple approach to various webmining problems by letting you perform a wide array of tasks from the comfort of the command line. No database needed: raw CSV files should be sufficient to do most of the work.

Notable: Can access several platforms, some of them via scraping and the API.

4CAT

4CAT is a research tool that can be used to analyse and process data from online social platforms. Its goal is to make the capture and analysis of data from these platforms accessible to people through a web interface, without requiring any programming or web scraping skills. Our target audience is researchers, students and journalists interested using Digital Methods in their work.

In 4CAT, you create a dataset from a given platform according to a given set of parameters; the result of this (usually a CSV or JSON file containing matching items) can then be downloaded or analysed further with a suite of analytical 'processors', which range from simple frequency charts to more advanced analyses such as the generation and visualisation of word embedding models.
