Computers are good at doing the same stuff over and over. Applications often do the same stuff, like rendering text encoded with markup, or drawing an cursor box, etc. The OS, like Unix did for the command-line, can offer a whole namespace of objects that get re-used over and over, to go beyond the command-line.
