Information science is the science of meaningful categorizations of data. It is distinct from computer science, though computers are often employed to make the best use of it. And has become much more than library science with the advent of the internet.

The basic idea is that all data represents knowledge and knowledge can be categorized for both ease of re-use by others and better understanding by the individuals organizing data.

These categorizations can take the form of subject headings, like in the Library of Congress. Or one can employ meaningful uses of color, like this project.

Information science, through good categorization, allows a simplification of the (n) complexity of the world by an order Omega(log n).
