If you are someone like me, who owns a lot of data and for some reason doesn't want to pay for cloud storage, but also wants a more convenient way to access their data, than using an external disk all the time, then you probably already considered owning a NAS. Buying an off-the-shelf NAS is an option, but you can also build your own DIY NAS from an old laptop or an inexpensive single-board computer, like a Raspberry Pi.

Also, if you are at least somewhat new to Linux, this can be a long and tedious adventure. I already watched a ton of YouTube videos in the topic and read a bunch on forums, so I thought, I could document my findings, so that not only I can find this information later, but also others, who may be in a similar situation as mine.

Media share - NAS

Here I describe how to install OpenMediaVault (OMV6) on a Raspberry PI (RasPi 3B+) and set up Shared Folders (SMB and AFP).

Media Servers

If you store movies on your OMV NAS, you may want to set up your own home media server in order to access your movies and tv shows from any device on your local network (with Plex you may also have the opportunity to easily establish global access). The setup of Plex Media Server (PMS) is easy and fast, but you may need to consider using an SD card with a relatively large storage capacity because we will need to use Docker to install Plex. Docker Containers can take up large space, even if you maintain them fairly regularly.
