The 24V start batteries of the Volvo CE240 are charged with the alternator on the engine, but also with solar panels and AC 230 V shore power. Additionally, the battery system is divided into batteries for starting and a battery for the computers. It is important that when the computer batteries are depleted, the start batteries are not affected. A relay ensures this. Moreover, the alternator and shore power should charge the starter batteries and the computer batteries. The solar panels must only be able to charge the computer batteries.

The computers use about 5 amps when in operation, amounting to 120 amps per day, equivalent to 2880 watts per day or 120 watts per hour. The computer battery is 24V/100Ah. For the lifespan of the battery, it is important not to discharge it beyond 50%, which means the battery has an actual capacity of 50 amp-hours. This means that the electronics can continue to operate for approximately 10 hours with the current battery.

The solar panels must therefore produce 120 watts per hour to maintain balance. Most solar panels deliver 12-18 volts; however, 24 volts is necessary. Therefore, two solar panels in series are required. An MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracker) is necessary to keep the dynamic voltage range constant at 24V and also ensures that the alternator current does not damage the solar panels and functions as a diode.

A total of 150 watts (2*75 watts) of solar panels should be sufficient, but consideration must be given to low efficiency due to dust outdoors and the fact that the crane is currently still in the shed. Thus, two 150-watt solar panels seem a good starting point. The solar panels must be monocrystalline, as they are shock-resistant.
