Some important questions in marine microbial ecology are as follows:

• Who is there?
• What are they doing?

There are many software tools and protocols currently available to answer these questions. However, most of these fail to provide a link between the microbial community structure (Who?) and the function (What are they doing?). Here we present a workflow to link the community structure and function to answer the more informative question:
