(Old) Shields - LSFN/Design GitHub Wiki
=Description= The mainstay defence of any ship, the shield is a versatile energy barrier preventing weapons' fire from scratching the nice new paintwork on the hull. The shield generator has a strength buffer that will be reduced when the shields take damage. This buffer replenishes itself over time as long as power is supplied. Conversely, if power is not supplied, the shield strength buffer will quickly decay to zero.
=Shield Penetration= The description implies that no weapon can affect the hull until the shields are down. Do we want any concept of shield penetration?
- Maybe some types of weapons always do some damage past the shield?
- Maybe a lower strength shield starts letting some damage through rather than absorbing it?
=Shield position and shield projectors= Are shields a bubble? Do they directly follow the shape of a hull like a skin? Or some other shape entirely?
From an easy of implementation point of view, I think I prefer them to follow the shape of the hull because that means 1) they're probably just an extra texture and 2) we don't have to do any extra intercept calculations (maybe these are trivial anyway).
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident had this concept of 'Fortress Shields' which were shield projectors for multiple ships. Take a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcdP3_YgBIE&t=4m25s
