##Welcome to Space. Now, start at the bottom. The Janitor is the lowest of the low on Space Station 13. While he is technically more important than an Assistant and more functionally useful than the Clown or Mime, most would agree that the Janitor gets far less attention. However, this also makes this role the one you can make your own. You can fade into the background as you please - unless you decide to make some noise.

##Equipment Your home, the Custodial Closet, begins with a wealth of equipment to start cleaning up space. In the boring, menial sense, not the Judge Dredd badass space-cop sense.

  • Galoshes that prevent you from slipping on wet floors and items such as bananas and the clown's PDA, but do nothing on space lubed floors
  • A spray bottle of space cleaner that can spray-clean up to three tiles at once
  • A trash bag to quickly pick up and bin trash
  • Three space cleaner foam grenades
  • A bucket for filling your janitorial cart
  • A few wet floor signs
  • A haz-mat suit, to protect from contagious diseases and alien facehuggers alike
  • A water tank to fill your janitorial cart from using your bucket
  • Two boxes of light bulbs to refill your light replacer or give to assistants so they can help replace lights
  • A light replacer used to remove broken light tubes from light fixtures and replace them with new ones with one click
  • A box of mousetraps to kill vermin and fingertips
  • Two bear traps for trapping Space Bears or your colleagues
  • A janitorial cart which holds a mop bucket, four signs, mop, spray bottle, trash bag and light replacer
  • A Janibelt, a handy belt that can hold many of your standard issue items
  • A backpack water tank, with inbuilt spray nozzle

##Defensive Cleaning Defensive Cleaning is to Janitors what Defensive Driving is to automobile owners travelling through Croydon in a windowless Aston Martin on a Friday night. It's probably not going to save you, but it looks good on the insurance if you try.

First, fill your Janitorial Cart by using your bucket on the water tank, then on the cart. Now fill your cart with everything you'll need - your trash bag, space cleaner, all the wet floor signs it can carry, and your trusty mop. Now patrol about the station, making sure to chase your cart down whenever someone runs into it.

When you find a spill, plop down some wet floor signs. It's good practice to put them a bit away from the mopping area on both sides, so sprinting spacemen have some reaction time to slow down - or at least when they don't, you can point smugly at the signs. If the mess is in a really high traffic area, it's normally best to use the space cleaner, which leaves no wet floor. If your bottle runs out, more can be acquired from Chemistry.

There are a few more tricks to make your life easier:

  • Finding a bar of soap means instant, slip-free cleaning of any mess
  • Your whole mop bucket can be filled with Space Cleaner, though you'll probably be shouted at for not using signs, even with no slip hazard
  • Your light replacer can be refilled with sheets of glass, not just spare bulbs
  • Your trash bag can pick up whole stacks of trash at once - or be used to conceal useful items

Good luck out there. You're probably going to get robbed and beaten anyway, but at least you can say you tried.
