Tools of the Trade
- You WILL need: screwdriver
- A crowbar
- Either a multitool or wirecutters
Yellow, insulated gloves are highly recommended for hacking to avoid taking (possibly lethal) burn damage from accidentally electrifying yourself. Hacking is still possible without insulated gloves, but at the risk of severe injury or death. Due to Nanotrasen budget cuts, the ones you find in tool storage are called "budget insulated gloves" and are the easiest to access if you are an assistant. These cheap replicas are unlikely to protect you from electric shock entirely and the chances of each pair of gloves working are as follows:
- 1 in 7 chance to be insulated
- 4 in 7 chance to have halved shock damage
- 1 in 7 to have 0.75x damage
- and 1 in 7 to do 1.5x damage
If you feel you are going to mess up a lot or aren't in a particular hurry, you can find good quality insulated gloves in engineering or in maintenance or auxiliary tool storage if you are lucky. Additionally, gloves found in maintenance have a chance to be fakes and can be identified by examining them (shift- clicking on them) and if it says "The colours are a bit dodgy" then these will shock you 100% of the time. Either ignore them or throw them into the corridor for some naive assistant to pick up thinking they are real. Proceed to feeling like a terrible person.
So, how do?
To begin hacking an airlock, use a screwdriver on the door to open the maintenance panel. Then, click on the door with wirecutters, a multitool, or an open hand (that is, you are holding nothing in your hand).
A panel will appear, detailing the status of the door and the wires present for you to manipulate.
In order to cut any wires, a wirecutter must be in your hand. In order to pulse any wires, a multitool must be in your hand. In order to attach a signaller to any wires, a signaller must be in your hand.
The wirecutter has the following effects when it cuts certain wires: Electrify wire - Permanently electrifies the door AI control wire - Permanently disables AI control Door bolts wire - Drops the door bolts, locking the door Main power wire - Permanently disables the main power to the door Backup power wire - Permanently disables the backup power to the door
The wires will all do the same things for all airlocks in a round, except for all security, command, vault and secure grey airlocks (red; dark blue; secure looking one at the vault which starts bolted; and the ones at the AI core and upload respectively) which are randomized.
