Definition
The Constraint Expansion Question is a thinking reframe system that replaces limiting, binary questions with expanded, solution-generating questions.
It removes perceived constraints by changing the structure of the question being asked.
Core Structure
- Identify the Constraint Question
- Replace with Expansion Question
- Open Possibility Space
- Generate Integrated Solutions
Core Principle
The limitation is not the situation.
The limitation is the question being asked about the situation.
Mechanism
Constraint → Better Question → Expanded Thinking → New Solutions
Key Distinctions
- Binary questions create limitation
- Expanded questions create possibility
- The brain follows the structure of the question
- Constraints are often question-based, not reality-based
Functional Breakdown
1. Identify the Constraint Question
Recognize limiting patterns such as:
- “Can I do this?”
- “Do I have to choose?”
- “Is this possible?”
These assume restriction.
2. Replace with Expansion Question
Introduce:
- “How can I do this while still achieving that?”
- “How can both be possible?”
3. Open Possibility Space
Shift from:
- yes/no thinking
to: - solution generation
4. Generate Integrated Solutions
Design outcomes that satisfy multiple priorities simultaneously.
Function
This framework eliminates false trade-offs and enables higher-level, integrated solutions.
Application Context
- Decision making
- Strategic thinking
- Business design
- Life balance
- Problem solving
Source-Aligned Notes
- “Ask a better question.”
- “Don’t choose—expand.”
- “The limitation is in the question.”
- “There’s always a way when you ask how.”
