Gain Station 13 Rules
Table of Contents
R0: Admin Discretion
The rules are not an all-encompassing book of law. There are some areas that may not be covered here. For that reason, all players are expected to follow the spirit of the rules, guidelines, and SOP listed here. If you want to/are doing something and are uncertain as to whether or not it is against the rules, contact an admin for guidance.
Administrators are, at their discretion, allowed to punish players who are found to be abusing “loopholes” in the rules. Likewise, they are allowed to waive punishments against those who have violated the rules if they believe the rulebreak was justified or necessary.
Administrators who apply punishment against players who have not explicitly broken any rules, or who waive punishment against players who have explicitly broken rules, will be held accountable for their actions and be dealt with appropriately if their actions are deemed to be a misuse of power.
Example 1: Banning a player for one month for leaving their department in a disorganized mess
Example 2: Refusing to take action against a player who self-antagged as captain and blew up the station.
R1: Respect & Civility
The “Don’t Be An Asshole” rule. The golden rule is to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Hate speech, abusive/toxic behavior, and harassment are forbidden. Do not use slurs. Do not use discriminatory language. Do not bully or abuse other players. Abuses of this rule will be dealt with very swiftly.
To a lesser extent, this also applies to controversial topics such as politics and religion. Do not talk about these topics in OOC. Likewise, do not use IC as a cheeky vector to skirt around talking about/arguing over these topics.
Example 1: “I can’t believe the federation elected Bonald Bump! We’re doomed!” / “Zoe Ziden was destroying the federation!” / etc.
Example 2: “You’re a <real religion> chaplain? Don’t you know how many people <real religion> killed?”
When speaking in OOC, be respectful and polite to other players. Do not antagonize, harass, or bully others. Rule breaks, violating SOP, etc, does not give you a free license to harass or antagonize the violating party. Contact an admin immediately and allow them to deal with the problem.
Example 1: OOC: “INVADER ZIM BLEW UP THE SM WHAT A FUCKING IDIOT”
Example 2: OOC: “THAT CUNTWAGON INVADER ZIM IS KILLING RANDOM PEOPLE”
Players are allowed to play characters who, in-character, are rude, assholes, or even abuse their position. This is NOT a license to aggressively single out and bully people ICly with the intent to harass the targeted player.
If you and another player do not get along, you are not required to roleplay with each other. You are, however, expected to maintain the bare minimum amount of cooperation and contact. For IC character disputes, you are still required to follow SOP and chain of command.
Example: John and Jane do not like each other OOCly/ICly. John is an engineer, and Jane is the Chief Engineer. John disregards every order that Jane gives to him, outright ignoring direct attempts to communicate with him or even becoming verbally combative with Jane. Station integrity and the RP experience of other players is negatively impacted as a result.
R2: Roleplay
As a medium-roleplay (MRP) SS13 server, a baseline amount of roleplay is expected from all players.
At minimum, players are expected to:
- Behave as though they are GATO-employed crewmembers, working aboard a station.
- Value their lives and wellbeing.
- Value the lives and wellbeing of those they are working alongside.
- Uphold the security and integrity of their own department and the station as a whole.
- Refrain from using netspeak and emojis when speaking in-character, unless it is suitable for the character, such as an IPC or protogen communicating through emoticons on their face, or a character actually saying “L-O-L” out loud.
- In this same vein, please try to avoid excessive references to memes while in-character. Remember that SS13 takes place hundreds of years into the future. How many 16th century jokes are you making today?
- IC descriptions should only include a physical description of your character. Details about their personality, background, and history should be omitted.
Your character should be somewhat fleshed out and realized. Character descriptions are not expected to be lengthy novels, but they should be something more than “John Spaceman is a normal guy.”
OOC Notes should be used to communicate roleplay preferences and anything you believe is important to communicate.
In addition, please refrain from the following:
-
Using IC/OOC notes to explain how others must act, think, or feel about your character. This is “Godmodding”, and removes agency from other players. Describing what someone might potentially think/feel is fine.
Example: “You feel intimidated by their feral appearance.”
Instead try, “Their feral appearance is intimidating.”
-
Forcing traits, background, or actions onto other players. This is also godmodding and removes player agency, and in severe cases can be a preference break.
Example: John is at the bar, describing a conversation he had with Jane which never actually happened. John tells everyone that Jane was a former member of the syndicate, which she never was. John finishes by showing naked pictures of Jane to everyone while claiming Jane keeps sending them to him, which also not only never happened, but makes Jane’s player extremely uncomfortable.
-
Naming yourself after real-world people (Tom Hanks, George Washington), fictional characters (Usada Pekora, Monkey D. Luffy), or meme/joke names (John G. Tide, Sidney Kate)
-
“Self-Antags”, which is defined as acting against the station while playing a regular crew member. Excessive destruction of station property, theft, and purposefully causing harm to crew are all examples of self-antagonism.
-
“Valid-Hunting”, which is defined as pursuing and disrupting anyone perceived to be an antagonist/event character while in a role which is not intended to do so. An example would be attempting to hunt down and kill someone who you think is an antagonist while playing as a chef.
-
“Murderboning”, which is defined as playing a role such as a non-round ending antagonist or security for the sole purpose of wantonly killing other players.
R3: Character Restrictions
Characters must adhere to the following guidelines. Characters that do not conform will be requested to change, or be deleted.
-
Characters MUST be a minimum of 18 years of age. This includes races which mature faster than humans. Even if your species matures at 3 years of age, your character must still be physically 18 at minimum.
-
Characters MUST be mentally of age. For species which take longer than 18 years of age to reach maturity, they must be at the minimum age for that species to be considered “mature”. If your species is considered mature at 100 years old, then they must be a minimum of 100 years old.
-
Characters MUST be physically of age. Shortstacked, small characters are permitted, but must not be described as “childish” or as “loli” or “shota”.
-
Characters MUST be of human-level intelligence. A character can be “dumb” or “primitive” but they cannot be “feral”. Put more simply, if your character stands on four legs and goes “bark bark bark”, you’ll be asked to remake/delete them. No animal fucking.
R4: Content + Consent
GS13 is a very fetish-focused server. As such, there is content which will be unavoidable to those playing. However, consent should always be factored into any sexually explicit interactions with other players.
If another character is flirting with yours or acting in any other sort of sexually explicit way with yours, and you do not wish to engage with them in that way, you should express that in LOOC chat.
Likewise, a failure to communicate this in LOOC should not be taken as an invitation to do as you please. If someone rebuffs you ICly, but you want to continue pressing the interaction, please attempt to probe them in LOOC to ensure they’re comfortable with the interaction.
Setting your OOC notes to clearly define your preferences is important to avoiding uncomfortable situations or interactions. Disregarding direct requests to cease sexually explicit interactions with another player is a severe rule violation and will be dealt with accordingly.
If someone has toggled non-con preferences, or states in their OOC notes that they enjoy non-con, the other player may still refuse to consent and that refusal must be acknowledged and respected.
As the server is fetish-focused, please be aware that you will not be able to avoid things such as seeing nude sprites, fat sprites, and sprites with excessively large breasts, bellies, butts, and genitalia. Additionally, some interactions may require other crew to strip you for non-sexual purposes, such as medical procedures/revivals.
Make an attempt to avoid ERP in high-traffic, public places. If you are ERPing in a publicly accessible place, do not get upset if your ERP is disrupted by other people. When ERPing in public or private, you are not required to use a subtler. However, subtlers ARE required when engaging in potentially upsetting fetishes, such as scat, watersports, gas, and gore. These should only ever be done using an anti-ghost subtler. Be aware that ANY emotes done without the use of an anti-ghost subtler will be visible to observers. If you don’t like random people watching your ERP, use a subtler. Always.
On a final note, SSD players cannot consent. Engaging in fetish content with SSD players such as force-feeding, unnecessary stripping, arousal menu functions, etc, is violating consent and will be treated with the same severity as any other consent violation.
R5: Metacommunications
Metacommunications or “Metacomms” is generally referred to as the acquisition of current-round information through OOC or external means, particularly when that information is being acted upon ICly.
Metacomms can also be considered to be information which was obtained while dead and observing.
Players are generally not allowed to metacomm, and any information regarding the current round should be kept out of the OOC chat, discord, private messages, and voice calls.
Rare exceptions for metacommunication would be mentors providing assistance to new and learning players, or admins communicating situations to players due to a bug/server issue. If you have a need to metacomm with someone (such as a friend you’re teaching the game to) please get permission from an admin before doing so.
You are NOT allowed to communicate your death to other players, even if you feel you’ve died in a place where you will never be discovered or due to a bug. If you believe your death was due to an error, server issue, etc, contact an admin for help.
R6: Powergaming
Powergaming is a very broad term which can reference a number of things. Generally, powergaming is considered to be playing purely in service to game mechanics with the intent to “win”, typically through means which would be unreasonable IC.
Examples of powergaming are varied, but can range from simply over-preparing for a situation which has no indication or threat of happening, or hoarding powerful equipment in order to make yourself effectively untouchable/unkillable. This includes, but is not limited to: Hoarding slime extracts, ballistic/energy weapons, and explosives without a proper justification.
Elevated alert levels may encourage more reasonable preparation in the event of an emergency, but care should still be taken to act within your means, with respect to rules against metaknowledge, and with respect to other players.
If you are ever unsure if what you are doing would be considered powergaming, simply ask yourself, “Does my character have reasonable cause to do this?” If you struggle to answer that in the affirmative, you may be powergaming.
Being bored, IC or OOC, does not provide reasonable cause.
R7: Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
SOP are basic expectations of various roles on station. These exist to ensure a baseline of work is completed and that departments aren’t habitually neglected by the people working them, or simply being picked for “flavor” with no intent to work them.
While SOP is largely in-character, it also carries OOC expectations. Occasional violations of SOP are not uncommon or unexpected, and in some specific cases may even be required due to unforeseen circumstances.
Repeated, blatant violations of SOP to the point of it appearing habitual or being problematic can result in temporary jobbans, or permanent jobbans following continual gross neglect and repeated punishments for failing to observe SOP.
Notable examples of SOP neglect include, but are not limited to:
-
A chemist who repeatedly refuses to create any medicines, even at the request of medical personnel, and leaves their counter window open with the intent to allow the crew full access to the chemlab.
-
An engineer that repeatedly refuses to set up power, respond to requests to fix breaches, or address power issues/outages.
-
A cook who uses the kitchen to exclusively cook for one single person, and refuses to serve the crew.
-
A doctor who uses prosthetic organs because they’re “easier/better” and refuses to provide organic alternatives when reasonably requested.
-
A roboticist who makes combat mechs to respond to minor threats, leaving them unlocked and unsecured around the station.
-
A miner who’s sole focus is clearly just fighting megafauna with no intent to gather resources for the station, and who perpetually leaves dangerous lavaland loot littered around the station.
-
A security officer who responds to any and all conflicts by whipping out a stun baton and beating the offended parties senseless before cuffing and dragging them to the brig and locking them inside without a headset and without setting a timer.
-
An AI who interprets minor corruptions of their laws (such as “All crew are pancakes” replacing “Protect all crew”) as reason to do the exact opposite of those laws, becoming destructive, going on killing sprees, etc.
-
A captain who treats their position as an all access pass to enter whatever department they want and do whatever job they please to entertain themselves, especially when disregarding crew who are actively working in that department.
R8: Ghost Roles
Ghost roles are positions taken by players not playing on station, and generally include things like the various hermits, or the GATO restaurant operators.
Ghost roles have varying goals and intents. Some are given specific instructions on how to behave, and these instructions must be followed, regardless of what is written here. For example, the Syndicate Comms Agent is specifically not allowed to leave their area for any reason, and in the event they feel at risk of falling into enemy hands, they must activate the onboard self-destruct. Not every ghost role is an enemy of the station, but not every ghost role is necessarily an ally either.
Ghost roles should not be taken with the sole intent to immediately rejoin the station. For example, do not take the Space Hermit role, escape, immediately get on station, and ask the HoP to assign you to a department. These roles are limited, taking them and abandoning them means others are not able to enjoy them as intended.
This does not mean that ghost roles are prohibited from interacting with the station in ANY capacity, but both the ghost role and the crew must acknowledge their different positions. The ghost role, regardless of what character is performing it, is not a member of the crew. The crew are not obligated to help them or treat them as an ally, nor are they obligated to provide them with access to the station proper. Likewise, the ghost role is not necessarily an ally of the station. While this means engaging in conflict and stealing from the station may be permitted to you, you must still refrain from murderboning and griefing.
Ghost role locations must not be interacted with by the crew/other ghost roles unless the ghost role is present and active there. Escaping into a ghost role location to avoid an ashstorm on Lavaland is fine, but taking equipment, breaking walls/windows, and rendering the location otherwise unusable is not permitted.
R9: General Conduct
A broader list of other rules which don’t really fit in anywhere else. These should still be observed and respected.
-
SSD players should not be looted unless absolutely necessary, such as to retrieve necessary items like the NAD, Spare ID, etc. Antagonists are exempt from this rule, but may only harm or kill SSD players if it is necessary.
-
SSD players may be moved to safe locations. They should not be placed alone in areas that they are unable to remove themselves from, such as in a department they lack access to.
-
If an SSD player has been SSD in a limited role for longer than 15 minutes, contact an admin about removing them from the round.
-
If an SSD player has been SSD in a limited role for longer than 30 minutes, they may be put into cryo. SSD players should NEVER be placed into cryo otherwise unless specifically requested.
-
Keep IC and OOC separate. Do not treat someone’s IC actions as a personal slight against you as a player. Likewise, as stated in R1, do not bring OOC feelings or opinions about another player into your IC interactions.
-
Do not prep for EORG (End of Round Grief). Additionally, EORG may only take place once the shuttle has docked with CC and the end of round screen has displayed. Griefing taking place prior to the shuttle arrival, during the arrival, and mid-transit will be treated as griefing and dealt with as such.
-
Do not rejoin a round as a character which has died that round without admin permission. If you would like to continue playing as that character, wait to be revived and/or cloned. You may also rejoin the round as a different character instead. This also applies to ghost roles.
-
Do not abuse CC teleporters / cryosleep to leave and rejoin a round in order to evade consequences, acquire gear/permissions, or heal damage. You may switch jobs via this method, but you must always take your ID and PDA with you to cryo, and you must return any department-specific equipment to that department, such as returning your advanced tools to engineering as an engineer, or your botany tools to hydroponics as a botanist. Do not leave restricted/department specific equipment somewhere to retrieve it as a role that would not normally have access to it.
-
When leaving a shift, do not leave restricted equipment, IDs, PDAs, or otherwise vital equipment in a pile outside of the CC teleporters / cryo. Leave department-specific equipment secured in your department, and keep your PDA and ID on your person when entering the teleporter / cryo.
-
Do not self sabotage or grief. This includes clearing all the chemist’s recipes from their chem dispenser for no reason, randomly killing yourself, or closing valves on the SM with the intent to cause a delamination.
