What my faith and calling compel me to do I do

James 2:15-16

Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?

Isaiah 58:6

Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?

This wiki is guided by my "raison d’agir" - my reason to act. A "raison d'etre" would imply that my existence and self worth come from my actions, and they do not. What is in this wiki is what I do, not why I am.

And this is what my faith, life experience, and instinctual inner voice all say to me: Hungry people should be given food to eat. Thirsty people should have something to drink. Oppressed people should have all their needs met, whatever that may be (healthcare, information, education, financial services, etc). This is why I do anything.

What my gifts and interests compel me to do

Proverbs 16:9

The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.

This wiki is about my specific interests as they relate to the above. I believe that data is critical in all of this. How do we hear what exactly people need? How do we diligently plan to meet needs? Many modern people, especially those in power, have tons of data, and I believe they often don't know what to do with it. Creatively and effectively moving, sorting, and presenting data as information helps people get what they need in a few ways,

  1. It can directly help a person to figure out what they need and where to get it.
  2. It can help an organization make better decisions on how to meet real needs directly.
  3. It can help an organization make better decisions on how to meet real needs indirectly (perhaps by meeting some "wants" in a way that also leads to needs being met).
  4. It can help an organization make money, and thus use that money to meet real needs directly.

This is why I am focused on developing the skills of Data Engineering, Software Engineering, and Data Analysis. I believe this is the nexus of my skills and the worlds needs: making platforms and opportunities for the world's poor and disadvantaged and the people serving them.

A Practical Example

(it's the message, sorry) Genesis 41

47-49 During the next seven years of plenty the land produced bumper crops. Joseph gathered up the food of the seven good years in Egypt and stored the food in cities. In each city he stockpiled surplus from the surrounding fields. Joseph collected so much grain—it was like the sand of the ocean!—that he finally quit keeping track.

50-52 Joseph had two sons born to him before the years of famine came. Asenath, daughter of Potiphera the priest of On, was their mother. Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh (Forget), saying, “God made me forget all my hardships and my parental home.” He named his second son Ephraim (Double Prosperity), saying, “God has prospered me in the land of my sorrow.”

53-54 Then Egypt’s seven good years came to an end and the seven years of famine arrived, just as Joseph had said. All countries experienced famine; Egypt was the only country that had bread.

55 When the famine spread throughout Egypt, the people called out in distress to Pharaoh, calling for bread. He told the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph. Do what he tells you.”

56-57 As the famine got worse all over the country, Joseph opened the storehouses and sold emergency supplies to the Egyptians. The famine was very bad. Soon the whole world was coming to buy supplies from Joseph. The famine was bad all over.
