Part 2::The Spirit (subconcious) - KeynesYouDigIt/Knowledge GitHub Wiki

((RH is not a christian - so lets call this the "subconcious", which is possibly related to the soul, and seems to be his focus here.))

stillness is the key

The domain of the soul

Think about Tiger Wood's epic career and epic personal breakdown.

Tiger failed to address and re-frame a toxic past, upbringing and focused yet self centered present, his subconcious and heart (what Ryan H calls "soul") caught up with him, and he became a sex addict as well as a generally difficult person.

Meaningful relationships could have helped him, time, peace, meditation, etc.

Choose virtue

Im really not sure what RH's definition of this is :). Patience, self control, and anything that made someone a good leader.

its a power you can draw upon, something that guides actions and attracts people.

Lots of shades of the universal virtue (fairness, patience, mercy, etc) but he doesnt resolve too well. He does talk about Seneca under Nero and the related hypocrisy. Nero eventually had Seneca commit suicide, so the compromises he made by serving Nero would kill him.

Virtue is slow and predictable success, avarice is fast and risky success.

Heal the inner child

Tiger was like DaVinci.

DaVinci's issues stemmed heavily from childhood. It's like theres a child within, always, looking for resolution.

DaVinci worked hard for anyone that would listen to his less traditional ideas after being disowned as an illegitimate son. He could not get what he needed from anyone.

Unexpectedly strong emotions often relate to childhood.

Many agree - GIVING what you did not get as a child is the best way to work on healing that wound (( Jesus anybody? seems like the HS is the most consistent way to do this ))

Beware Desire

Using JFK's sex addiction (which was crazy!) as an example, RH shows how giving in to various wants without having them subject to our concious minds drives us insane and causes suffering. This was a really buddhist chapter.

Enough

And caeser wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer.

History relates no instance in which a conqueror has been surfeited with conquests. -Stefan Zweig

Based on this anecdote, Kurt Vonnegut wrote this obituary/poem for The New Yorker in May of 2005 .

True story, Word of Honor: Joseph Heller, an important and funny writer now dead, and I were at a party given by a billionaire on Shelter Island. I said, “Joe, how does it make you feel to know that our host only yesterday may have made more money than your novel ‘Catch-22’ has earned in its entire history?” And Joe said, “I’ve got something he can never have.” And I said, “What on earth could that be, Joe?” And Joe said, “The knowledge that I’ve got enough.” Not bad! Rest in peace!”

— Kurt Vonnegut

((Anxiety produces hard work, contentment produces good work. content people do what they love. Anxious people love nothing but rest.))

Bathe in Beauty

As long as this exists,” I thought, “this sunshine and this cloudless sky, and as long as I can enjoy it, how can I be sad?” The best remedy for those who are frightened, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere they can be alone, alone with the sky, nature and God. -- Anne Frank

Get out in nature! enjoy things! simple things!

Accept a higher power

Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself, but talent instantly recognizes genius. Arthur Conan Doyle

For RH, the important part isnt acknoledging God, its achknoledging that YOU are NOT God.

Then he kinda gets in to epicurs' balsphemy :( why would God judge us yaddah yaddah yaddah

Enter Relationships

A litan of examples of successful, especially the consistently successful over long periods of time, and how they had frinedships and reomantic partners and invested time in these relationships. Other people are a great why when your own why dwindles.

Conquer Your Anger

MJ's bitter HOF speech - which Tiger Woods sayd "oh I get it" to ... shows that great people can become very angry, but that anger unchecked robs you of peace.

(( my takeaway - anger is like a turbo - it can drive you for short times, but hurts and blows up the engine when overused and not subjected to God, people, etc... its like fight or flight.))

Vincent added this quote

It may sometimes be expedient for a man to heat the stove with his furniture. But he should not delude himself by believing that he has discovered a wonderful new method of heating his premises.

All is one

“You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch.” ― Edgar Mitchell

Everyone is made in the image of God is RH's christian ""version"" of this... which is fine???
