Setting up a VM & Linux OS - KSU-CS-Software-Engineering/HSPC GitHub Wiki

Summary

For this project, we chose to use VMware Workstation Pro provided by VMware and ran Ubuntu 19.04 on it.

At first, we considered using Oracle's VirtualBox. But there were unnecessary crashes. As a result, we ended up using VMware's Workstation Pro. We recommend use of VMware Workstation Pro because managing threads, memory, and disk space is much easier and we experienced little to no crashes when using it.

The Linux OS used is a bit more ambiguous for the purpose of developing and running the project. If a lighter, Linux OS is preferred, we recommend using that. Ubuntu is user-friendly and popular; albeit a little bigger and slower to other Linux Distributions.

Setting Up

  1. Download a Linux Distribution such as Ubuntu 19.
  2. Download and install a virtual machine such as VMware's Virtual Workstation Pro.
  3. Boot up the OS on the virtual machine and allocate memory and number of threads for optimal performance.
