Class 9 Lab 1 ‐ Securing a Home - Justin-Boyd/CIT-Class GitHub Wiki

Task 1

Question 1

What should be taken into account when considering the location of a home?

Answer
If privacy is important, the location should be hidden among natural surroundings. The location should also be close to nearby emergency services. Consider natural disasters that occur in the area as well.

Question 2

How tall should your fences be when designing a secure home? And why should they be that height?

Answer
A fence that is 3–4 feet tall would deter many trespassers, and a height greater than 6 feet is generally considered too tall to climb.

Question 3

How could you landscape the yard around your home to provide natural access control?

Answer
Landscaping should be designed in a way that points visitors to your choice of entry. A well-lit trail accompanied by sideline grass should lead to the main entrance. Trees should be distanced from windows to prevent intruders from climbing them and entering the home.

Question 4

Which access controls would you implement? List at least three.

Answer
Locks on gates
Locks on Doors
Window locks
Egress sensors
A dog in the yard
Lights with overlapping zones to prevent dark spots
Motion detectors

Question 5

Which surveillance controls would you use?

Answer
Hidden cameras - CCTV in plain sight is not recommended for homes. While it may deter some intruders, others may see it as an invitation, thinking that the presence of cameras indicates something valuable is there to steal.

Question 6

Can you think of any other helpful security measures that would secure other aspects of a home in case of an emergency?

Answer
A safe for documents and money
Fire alarms and sprinklers
Doorbell, video, and audio of the visitor
A Smart system that closes curtains at night
Fire-resistant doors
Bars on windows

Task 2

Question 1

Which access controls should be applied to an entrance of a building?

Answer
The entrance to the building should have some form of User-Activated Reader with a PIN code. A card reader would be more secure, but less practical.

Question 2

How would you secure the lobby of an apartment building?

Answer
The lobby should be well lit and have a CCTV system as well as some form of IDS. A doorman is a more secure, but more expensive option.

Question 3

Which security controls should be applied to an elevator?

Answer
The elevator shaft should have motion detectors to prevent the door from being pried open when the elevator is not present and to prevent burglars from breaking in through the elevator shaft.

Question 4

How would you secure an apartment’s entrance?

Answer
At least two locks should be in place, one to secure the door to the frame which can be accessed from inside and outside the apartment, and another which can be accessed only from within the apartment.

The best deterrent for an apartment would be a dog.
