Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions page!
Here is where we list answers to common questions we receive regarding mod installation, content, and so on.
Installation
How do I install the mod?
Please refer to the instructions listed here.
I downloaded and installed the mod files, but the game is still vanilla DDLC.
Double check your installation - remember that mod files must be extracted/unzipped, as well as the DDLC base game files.
I downloaded and installed the mod files, but the game is nothing like the screenshots on the website.
You may have installed the discontinued distribution of Just Natsuki: delete your installation and retry with the instructions above. Remember: the only official mod files are from GitHub!
I downloaded the mod, but not from GitHub. Is it legitimate?
No - we never distribute our mod outside of GitHub. Any distributions or downloads of our mod that are not from the official JN GitHub are not recognized by the team, and action may be taken where we deem necessary to remove such files.
There is no way to guarantee the safety or how up to date any unofficial distribution is, so we strongly recommend all users only download mod files from the official JN GitHub.
Do I need to pay for the mod?
No - and any websites (such as itch.io) requesting payment or donations on our behalf are a scam.
Alongside this, there is no guarantee that any files hosted elsewhere will be up to date, or free from tampering by third parties.
Please report any findings of requests for payment to the team, and remember: the only official mod files are from GitHub!
What operating systems does the mod support?
We offer support for all the major desktop operating system: Windows, Linux and Macintosh.
Please be aware that due to limitations with the engine, not all side features are functional on all platforms. We do however aim to ensure that all major features work equally well across each platform.
Is there mobile support/a mobile port?
There is no official mobile port, nor are there plans to introduce one at this time.
Please be aware that any mobile port of the mod is unofficial and therefore not eligible for support by the Just Natsuki team.
Updates
How do I update the mod?
Please refer to the instructions listed here.
I downloaded and installed newer mod files, and now my game won't launch.
You may need to delete your persistent file: make a backup first, delete the original, then try launching DDLC.exe
.
Is there an automatic update function?
There is no automatic function capability at this point. For the time being, all updates must be performed manually.
How often are updates released?
As a community-driven passion project, we work for free and do our best to deliver content as and when the schedule of the team allows - as such there is no set schedule for updates.
Please remember that the team are people too, and have their own lives beyond working on the project - don't message them directly for information!
Can I see what the team are working on?
Yes! You can see what we have planned here, and what is currently awaiting addition to the mod here.
However we ask that any discoveries made regarding features, mechanics and so on are kept private: please do not spoil the mod experience for your fellow players.
Will my progress be kept through updates?
Yes! We strive to ensure that players can be confident their save data will always carry through updates to the mod, given the update steps are followed correctly.
Nonetheless, we always encourage our players to back up their save data before performing any update or modification.
Backups and restores
Can I back up my save data? / How do I find my persistent?
You will first need to locate your persistent; this will differ based on the operating system you are using.
To locate your persistent, enter the following into the search bar of your file manager, based on your operating system:
- Windows: %APPDATA%/RenPy/JustNatsuki
- OSX: ~/Library/RenPy/JustNatsuki
- Linux: ~/.renpy/JustNatsuki
Once you have located the persistent file, this should be copied and saved to a separate location: we recommend a backup strategy using multiple locations (for example, a USB drive as well as cloud storage) with multiple copies of the persistent on each backup location, just in case.
Reporting bugs and making suggestions
How do I report a bug with the mod?
Please log a bug report through the Issues on GitHub, clicking New issue, then selecting Report Bug. Only one bug per report, please!
How do I request support for the mod?
Please log a support request through the Issues on GitHub, clicking New issue, then selecting Support Request. Only one item per request, please!
Where can I make suggestions for the mod?
Please log a feature request through the Issues on GitHub, clicking New issue, then selecting Feature Request. Please note we do not take suggestions from any other avenue of communication. Only one suggestion per request, please!
My game states that a problem has occurred/Natsuki is not at her desk.
Please log a support request through the Issues on GitHub, clicking New issue, then selecting Support Request. Be sure to provide your persistent and log files as an attachment.
Mod content
How do I progress in the mod/unlock a specific feature?
Simply put, all good things take time.
Visit Natsuki often, explore all of your options and most importantly, treat her well!
Please remember - this is a long-term mod, with relationship progression happening over weeks and months: if you are looking for instant romance, then this is not the mod for you.
We release updates whenever we can, so be sure to check in and update often!
Natsuki isn't talking often enough/Natsuki is talking too much.
You may wish to adjust the random chatter frequency: you may find this under the Settings menu in-game.
Natsuki isn't talking at all.
If Natsuki isn't talking anymore, and the chat frequency is not set to Never, then she may have run out of things to talk to you about for the time being: she will mention this directly at least once to the player if this is the case. Bear in mind that more topics are unlocked as you spend time together, visit repeatedly and perform other activities within and outside of the mod, so be sure to keep up your visits!
If you wish for Natsuki to keep talking, you may enable Repeat Topics under the Settings menu in-game: Natsuki will then talk about whatever comes to her mind.
Can I view my affinity/affection / Do you plan on adding a way to check affinity/affection?
No, there is neither a way to check your affinity or any plans to introduce a means to do so.
As a team we feel that it devalues the relationship between Natsuki and the player by tying actions to a solid number - furthermore, the log already offers reassurance that affinity gains/losses/cap changes are taking place. As with any other internal game data, it exists primarily for driving functionality: we wish to use it to show, not tell.
We also wish to avoid competition with players around comparing affinity values, as has been seen with similar mods. Enjoy your time with Natsuki - a relationship isn't a race!
Remember - you can always ask Natsuki how she feels about you through the Talk menu, and keep an eye out for visual clues. If she likes you, you'll know!
My log says affinity is blocked. What do I do?
Tell Natsuki how you feel!
I have security concerns about the mod. Can I view the source code?
Yes! As an open-source project, we pride ourselves on transparency.
You are free to view our codebase under the Code tab; however we ask that any discoveries made regarding features, mechanics and so on are kept private: please do not spoil the mod experience for your fellow players.
Please also note that the team retains the right to deny technical support to users we suspect to have been cheating.
Cheating includes actions/measures designed to bypass, defeat or eliminate intended game mechanics; including but not limited to affection/trust gain/loss, locked content, consequences for in-game actions and time travelling. Assisting other users in performing the actions listed previously is also considered cheating, and as such is liable to the withdrawal of support.
Do you support submods/external content?
Official submod support/tooling is something we are looking to introduce when time permits.
You are however welcome to add your own custom clothing and outfits! Please see the Custom clothing and outfitting guide.
You may wish to make your own changes to JN, however please note we don't offer support to users modifying their own installation - please see the terms of our license for details.
I want to modify/have already modified my installation. Can you help me if something goes wrong?
In the interest of balancing the needs of the community in terms of support with our commitment to delivering new content and fixes, we unfortunately do not offer support for users modifying their installation.
You are welcome to do so, but this is at your own risk: and please be aware that distributing tools/guides for cheating will not be tolerated.
We retain the right to revoke our offer of support to users we deem to have cheated: you may be blacklisted from raising issues, including for new features and support requests/bug reports.
Why is my game warning me about running source (.rpy) files?
This warning is shown when the game detects uncompiled Ren'Py source code in your game
folder: this generally happens when you are running source code instead of a true release, or if you have a modified installation.
To dismiss this warning, delete all source code (.rpy
) files and reinstall the mod using the files distributed in the latest release.
Please note that we do not offer technical support to those running modified installations of JN.
If you understand the risks associated with modifying your installation and wish to dismiss the source code warning, you may use the following snippet:
persistent._jn_scw = False
How do I gift Natsuki new clothing/an outfit?
Please refer to the Custom clothing and outfitting guide.
