Description
Mighty Fortress conjures a majestic, fortified structure at a location you choose within range. The fortress appears in an unoccupied space and provides a secure, defensible location for the caster and allies.
Effects:
-
Structure Details:
- The fortress is a square or rectangular building made of stone, reinforced with iron and covered in battlements.
- It covers an area up to 4,000 square feet (for example, a 50-foot by 80-foot structure) and is up to three stories tall.
- The structure includes a main keep, inner and outer courtyards, outbuildings (like stables), and a surrounding moat if desired.
- The building is furnished with basic amenities such as furniture, food, and drink sufficient to sustain 100 humanoids for up to 7 days.
-
Defensive Features:
- The fortress is surrounded by a magical force that makes its walls immune to the disintegrate spell and resistant to nonmagical damage.
- The outer doors are reinforced with iron, with locks that can only be opened by the caster or those designated by the caster.
-
Servants:
- The fortress comes with 100 invisible servants, similar to the effects of the unseen servant spell, who maintain the structure and its contents. They perform mundane tasks, such as cleaning, cooking, and minor repairs.
-
Customization:
- The caster can choose the layout, design, and appearance of the fortress to reflect personal taste or needs. This includes deciding on the arrangement of rooms, decoration, and whether the fortress appears menacing, elegant, or utilitarian.
Strategic Applications:
-
Safe Haven:
- Mighty Fortress is ideal for creating a safe and secure base of operations, particularly in hostile or dangerous environments where temporary or portable shelters might not suffice.
-
Defensive Stronghold:
- The fortress’s defensive features make it a formidable place to hold out against enemies. The immunity to disintegrate and resistance to nonmagical damage make it difficult to breach.
-
Temporary Base:
- The structure lasts until the spell is dismissed by the caster or until it is destroyed. It provides a strategic advantage for resting, planning, or as a rally point during extended adventures or campaigns.
Limitations:
-
Casting Time:
- The spell takes 1 minute to cast, which means it cannot be used quickly in response to immediate danger.
-
Permanent Structure:
- Although the spell is instantaneous, meaning the structure remains until destroyed or dismissed, it is a permanent fixture in the landscape once created. This means it cannot be easily moved or adjusted.
-
Material Component:
- The spell consumes a diamond worth at least 500 gp, which could be a significant cost depending on the caster's resources.
-
Vulnerability:
- Despite its formidable defenses, the fortress is not invulnerable. Powerful spells or concerted efforts by enemies can eventually overcome its protections.
Roleplaying Opportunities:
-
Custom Design:
- The ability to design the fortress allows for personal touches and unique elements that reflect the caster’s personality or the party’s needs. This can add a rich layer of immersion and creativity to the game.
-
Political and Social Influence:
- A permanent fortress can be used to establish a stronghold in a particular region, potentially influencing local politics, attracting followers, or serving as a base for a larger organization or kingdom.
-
Symbol of Power:
- The fortress can serve as a symbol of the caster's power and influence, particularly if placed in a strategically important or visible location.
Notes:
-
Ideal For:
- Mighty Fortress is best suited for high-level campaigns where establishing a long-term base or safe haven is strategically important. It is particularly useful for characters with ambitions of territorial control or leadership.
-
DM Considerations:
- The DM may need to consider the impact of a permanent structure on the game world, especially in terms of local politics, economy, and potential conflicts.
