Description

Power Word Pain is a high-level enchantment spell that inflicts excruciating pain on a creature, severely debilitating them.

Effects:

  • Target:

    • Choose one creature you can see within range.
    • If the target has 100 hit points or fewer, it is subjected to a crippling pain.
  • Effect on Target:

    • The target is incapacitated with unbearable pain.
    • The target suffers disadvantage on attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws.
    • Movement speed is reduced to 10 feet.
    • The target cannot take reactions.
  • Ending the Spell:

    • The effects last until the target succeeds on a Constitution saving throw made at the end of each of its turns.
    • The effects also end if the target receives magical healing or if a Remove Curse, Greater Restoration, or Wish spell is cast on it.

Strategic Applications:

  • Battle Control:

    • This spell is extremely effective at neutralizing a powerful foe early in a battle, rendering them nearly helpless.
  • Targeting:

    • Choose targets that have 100 hit points or fewer to ensure the spell takes effect.
    • Ideal for use against foes that rely on high mobility or multiple actions per turn.
  • Combo Potential:

    • Use in conjunction with other debilitating effects or while your allies focus on taking down other threats, as the incapacitated target is temporarily out of the fight.

Roleplaying Opportunities:

  • Intimidating Presence:

    • Casting Power Word Pain can demonstrate your character’s immense power, capable of bringing even the mightiest opponents to their knees with a word.
  • Moral Considerations:

    • Using this spell might be viewed as cruel or inhumane, potentially causing tension with more morally inclined party members or NPCs.

Notes:

  • Verbal Component:

    • The spell requires only a verbal component, making it quick and easy to cast in most situations.
  • Instantaneous Effect:

    • There is no saving throw to resist the initial effect of the spell; it only ends after the target succeeds on a Constitution save or receives aid.
  • Ideal For:

    • Power Word Pain is particularly useful for enchanters or powerful casters who want to exert control over the battlefield by neutralizing dangerous enemies swiftly.
