Immolation
- Level: 5th-level
- School: Evocation
- Casting Time: 1 action
- Range: 90 feet
- Components: V
- Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
Description
Immolation engulfs a creature in flames, dealing significant fire damage over time and potentially causing lasting burning effects.
Effects:
-
Targeting:
- You choose one creature within range to engulf in magical flames.
-
Initial Damage:
- The target must make a Dexterity saving throw.
- On a failed save, the target takes 8d6 fire damage immediately.
- On a successful save, the target takes no damage (this spell has no effect on a successful save).
-
Ongoing Damage:
- If the target fails the initial save, it continues to burn for the duration of the spell.
- At the end of each of its turns, the burning target takes an additional 4d6 fire damage.
- The target can use its action to make another Dexterity saving throw to extinguish the flames. On a successful save, the spell ends.
-
Flames and Light:
- The flames created by this spell shed bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet.
-
Non-Flammable:
- The flames do not spread and do not ignite flammable objects or creatures other than the target.
Strategic Applications:
- High Single-Target Damage: Immolation is particularly effective against single, powerful enemies due to its high damage output over several rounds.
- Persistent Threat: The ongoing damage forces the target to deal with the flames immediately, often wasting their action on saving throws instead of attacking.
- Battlefield Illumination: The light produced by the flames can illuminate dark areas, potentially revealing hidden enemies.
Limitations:
- Concentration: The spell requires concentration, so taking damage or casting another concentration spell can end it prematurely.
- Dexterity Save: Creatures with high Dexterity or evasion abilities can entirely avoid the effects of this spell, making it a gamble against such opponents.
- Single Target: Immolation affects only one creature, limiting its utility in situations where multiple enemies are present.
Notes:
-
Immolation is ideal for dealing with bosses or other key targets that need to be taken down quickly, especially in scenarios where you can maintain concentration.
-
The ongoing damage can be significant, making it a powerful tool to wear down enemies over time.
-
The spell is less effective against creatures with resistance or immunity to fire damage, so consider the enemy’s strengths before casting.
-
Ideal For: Evocation wizards, sorcerers, or other fire-themed spellcasters looking for a reliable way to apply consistent fire damage to a dangerous foe.
