$Mechanus$ is a plane of existence parallel to reality.

It is the place of order.

All beings from this plane are lawful, as they function to high precision to accomplish a purpose. They are machines, but themselves a cog in the larger machine of Mechanus.

You would call the beings from this plane robots, constructs, or maybe artificial intelligence. They are precise, emotionless, effective.

Mechanus is itself a greater collective. The proverbial Deus ex Machina. From the cogs emerges a greater machine with a greater purpose. What this purpose is, can anyone really understand?

Clockwork mechanisms run this place. Any independent thought is smashed, and the being that had it is recycled. No waste or mercy. Information is the best commodity here. Magic works as any other mechanic tecnae, and it filters from Mechanus to other planes.

When a magician, an artificer, or maybe a warlock attunes to Mechanus they are using magic as a mechanism. They gain insight into the clockwork of this world. They use their will to impose order into their own world. They connect to the mechanics of the universe and impose a purpose and an order. But information may flow both ways. They may feel the pull from the collective being that is Mechanus. Abherrant to individuality. Abherrant to chaos. Abherrant to freedom. Aiming for purpose, and mercifully embracing this imperfect being, Mechanus will influence the mind and behavior of anyone that attunes to it to draw the power of its magic. The longer you are connected, the longer you risk assimilation. You will start feeling this influence with little details, like compulsions for order, and glitches in perception. Feelings will eventually become something unnecessary. Eventually, you will impose this order on all aspects of your life. You may then start feeling uncomfortable with your own biology, chaotic and fragile as it is. You may replace parts of yourself with mechanic limbs, electrical eyes, or even magically attune your brain to Mechanus. This assimilation resembles a transcendence into immortality, but you are not yourself anymore. You are completely mechanical now. You are a cog of Mechanus. You have been assimilated.
