Eco.❄️ The Arctics & Tundras - JulTob/DnD GitHub Wiki
Cold. Icey. Vast extensions of nothingness. Air that hurts any exposed surface. Extreme dryness. Icebergs that move around you too slowly to notice the deadly trap. Predators big as buildings and fast as lightning. Baren soil.
Peaceful. Silent. Beautiful.
The Auroras and the stars guide the night travelers of the tundra. And a cold barely rising sun guards the day.
Who would want to live here?
Well, White Werebears, Vampires, Kitsunes, Giants, Giant Owls... As well as many real-life animals: Foxes, Orcas, Bears, Hares, Owls... and communities of humanoids: herds of Goliaths, White and Silver Dragonborn Clans, Druids from any species, Snow Lizardfolk, Inuit-like Halflings and Humans, Rus and Mongol style kingdoms of men, Vikin orcs...

Pure White or dark Black, depending on their hunting times, the Giant Owls are the center of a society of Avens. Closely connected with the 𝑪𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑾𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓, these creatures are Guardians between the planes.
Bearers of Ancient knowledge, the Owls preside over the Owlings of the north. Owlings are owl-like humanoids of great inquisitive nature and great wisdom. Greatly attuned to many different magics, from the Arcanic to the Fatua and the Occult, but barely to the Devine.
Their curiosity and intelligence make them great magic users, but they also are creatures of great resilience and stealth. Great warriors that can fly during the night without making a sound.
𝑭𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏 Angels
Some Angels wander the tundra for their service demands they carry the heart of a storm, or to carry the will of some God from the Ice domain. Their touch is cold and their wings are icy and snowy white. They sometimes search for a warm touch, and fall into the temptation of visiting a settlement. The care of some humanoid sometimes produces Aasimars of white skin and ice crystal halos.
Other Angels from other domains just wander into the Tundra after falling from their graces. Sometimes as self-imposed exile, other times as punishment or vanishment. Their wings turn black and lack light, even their halos turn into shadows.
𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔉𝔞𝔢
The Fae from The 𝑪𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑾𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓 reside, sometimes permanently, in these lands. Slipping into this plane, they carry the will of 𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝐿𝒶𝒹𝓎 𝒪𝒻 𝐼𝒸𝑒, or wander into the plane for their own adventurous purposes.
Little pixies carry the flakes from the first snows, and can tell if the storm will be devastating or comfortable. Firbolgs embrace the cold and pure air of the mountains and hills snowboarding through the fresh snow chest bare. Harengon soldiers and messengers hop through the forest and snow as agile as through lands. And Snow Kitsunes stealth to campers and set traps of magic allure to get anything of value from them, from mementos to dreams, apples, names, brushes and pans, and only rarely Gold. Satyrs, with their umbrellas and thick scarves, may be as surprised to find you as you are to find them.
𝚂𝚗𝚘𝚠𝚢 𝙴𝚕𝚎𝚖𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚜
The Elementals of the Tundra are usually icy or snowy. Like gigantic snowmen, they carry the essence of Snow with their calm and friendly attitude. They let any passerby walk through them to recompose and follow them curiously through their path. Silent and calm. Ice Elementals usually are way more sensitive and fragile, as well as deadly. Storm and windy elementals can be extremely cruel, not letting anyone go their way, by rising wind strikes that carry little ice needles and slow any progress. They can make a small walk a deadly event.
Genashi of the Water element may live among the peoples in the Tundra, attuned to the cold. Great Ice Sculptors and Architects, their cities look like crystal castles in the barren tundra.
Giants & Goliaths
Goliaths are naturally adapted to the icy tundra. Barely dressed compared to any other races. They are related to giants, and therefore immense in stature for a humanoid. Many of the Polar Werebears are in fact Goliaths, and help any traveler in need. They are widely known as Armored Bears. They are a secluded people, but honorable and proud. The ancient traditions they carry keep them alive, and value every sacrifice for the community. Loyal friends, and terrible foes, Goliaths are the best survivalists in the Icy lands.
Giants do live in the Tundra. Oddly enough, sometimes above the clouds of Storms. At these terrible heights they keep their Cloud Castles. To reach them is to reach the heart of a storm.
Arctic Goblins & Hobgoblins
Arctic Goblins are the variety of Goblins you can find in Arctic and Tundra ecosystems. They are small, monkish creatures with flat faces and a tale, mostly covered by white fur. They are skillful as well as dangerous. Like little Bigfoots, they are hard to spot, and also furious to encounter. Hobgoblins are bigger and with longer arms, as well as having long beards with lots of decorations. Fully white and with long fangs, they are usually confused with Bigfoots.
Mostly hunters and fishers, Goblins and Hobgoblins keep bases underground where it is warmer, and are well armed. They will protect their kind to the last breath, and venerate a mixture of ancient ghosts, local winter deities, 𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝐿𝒶𝒹𝓎 𝒪𝒻 𝐼𝒸𝑒, and ancient creatures such as White Dragons.
𝔚𝔥𝔦𝔱𝔢 𝔇𝔯𝔞𝔤𝔬𝔫𝔰 and Servitude (Dragonborns, Kobolds, and Lizardfolk)
Yeah, Lizards and snow usually don't mix, but these are MAGIC LIZARDS 😎.
𝔚𝔥𝔦𝔱𝔢 𝔇𝔯𝔞𝔤𝔬𝔫𝔰 and their cohorts usually find bases near Volcanos and peaks of great mountains. From there they fly away easily and the elements provide a natural protection for their hoard.
𝔚𝔥𝔦𝔱𝔢 𝔇𝔯𝔞𝔤𝔬𝔫𝔰 have a natural tuning to cold, as their breath weapon and intrinsic magic is ice-themed.
Their diet is basically whales, sharks, adventurers, and other great creatures they can find in the cold. Hunting is a laborious process in the arctic, so a white dragon may let you die naturally to then scavenge your remains. They also scavenge for treasures, in giant's fortresses or ice castles. Acclimated to a hard land, they see most creatures as prey.
Great swimmers, and lovers of the cold, they usually keep an entrance to the layer underwater. Also as a scape way. The main entrance is usually vertical: a caldera of ice that descends like a bottleneck, like an empty volcano, or an active one. They make these by piling icebergs and using their breath weapons to fuse them together. They also keep frozen creatures there, as a snack for later and a warning to adventurers. In the middle, a great room keeps treasures and artifacts.
𝔖𝔦𝔩𝔳𝔢𝔯 𝔇𝔯𝔞𝔤𝔬𝔫𝔰, while benign in nature, function in a similar way in the ecology. The greatest difference is in their underlings.
Speaking of:
- 𝔚𝔥𝔦𝔱𝔢 𝔇𝔯𝔞𝔤𝔬𝔫𝔰 usually keep a society of white Kobolds, snow Goblins, or other lesser creatures that follow their wills.
- 𝔖𝔦𝔩𝔳𝔢𝔯 𝔇𝔯𝔞𝔤𝔬𝔫𝔰 lead, through wisdom, societies of white snow Lizardfolk.
- 𝕯𝖗𝖆𝖌𝖔𝖓𝖇𝖔𝖗𝖓𝖘 may work for either kind of entity. Their color is independent of alignment, but most are white and silvery.
Draconic societies, as well as lizardfolk, have used their great adaptative powers to keep themselves not just alive, but a threat. Isolated communities, and a bit sneaky by camouflaging in the snow, these white draconics can dominate vast areas of fishing and hunting, and even (maybe magically) grow some trees for syrup. Hard, but very nice when you get to know them, these societies work for the well-being of their kinds and the accomplishment of the goals of their Dragon Lords.
