9th Level
Invulnerability
- Level: 9th-level
- School: Abjuration
- Casting Time: 1 action
- Range: Self
- Components: V, S, M (a small piece of adamantine worth at least 500 gp, which the spell consumes)
- Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes
Description
Invulnerability grants you near-complete protection from physical and magical harm for a short duration.
Effects:
- Damage Immunity:
- For the duration of the spell, you are immune to all damage. This includes both physical and magical damage types.
Strategic Applications:
-
Ultimate Defense:
- Invulnerability is the pinnacle of defensive spells, providing complete protection against any form of damage. It is ideal for scenarios where you anticipate taking significant damage, such as facing powerful enemies or enduring devastating area-of-effect spells.
-
Battlefield Domination:
- While the spell is active, you can engage in high-risk maneuvers, draw enemy fire, or position yourself in hazardous areas without fear of harm, allowing you to control the battlefield and protect allies.
-
Key Moments:
- This spell is best used during critical moments in a battle or when securing an objective where survival is paramount. It allows you to confidently advance through traps, hazardous environments, or direct combat with powerful foes.
Limitations:
-
Concentration:
- The spell requires concentration, meaning it can be disrupted by taking damage or being affected by concentration-breaking effects. Despite the immunity to damage, effects that force concentration checks, like Dispel Magic or Counterspell, can potentially end the spell.
-
Limited Duration:
- With a duration of up to 10 minutes, Invulnerability is effective for short, intense encounters but is not sustainable for prolonged engagements. The spell’s duration requires careful timing to maximize its effectiveness.
-
High Resource Cost:
- The spell consumes a material component worth at least 500 gp, which can be expensive and requires preparation. Additionally, as a 9th-level spell, it uses one of the most powerful and limited spell slots available, so it should be reserved for critical situations.
-
Situational Usefulness:
- While immune to damage, the spell does not protect against conditions, mind control, or other non-damage-based effects, leaving you vulnerable to such attacks.
-
No Offensive Capabilities:
- Invulnerability provides unparalleled defense but does not enhance your offensive abilities. It’s a purely defensive spell, so it must be paired with other tactics or allies who can take advantage of the protection it offers.
Notes:
-
Roleplay and Flavor:
- Invulnerability can be a dramatic and awe-inspiring spell, symbolizing an ultimate shield or divine protection. Characters who are protectors, divine champions, or arcane masters might use this spell as a testament to their power and resilience.
-
Synergy with Other Spells:
- Combine with spells that require concentration to maintain powerful effects without the risk of losing them due to damage. It also pairs well with abilities or tactics that involve positioning in hazardous areas or taking on overwhelming odds.
-
Ideal For:
- Wizards, sorcerers, and other high-level spellcasters who need absolute protection during key moments in a campaign. This spell is particularly useful for characters who are expected to endure significant harm or who need to protect others by becoming an unassailable shield.
Mass Polymorph
- Level: 9th-level
- School: Transmutation
- Casting Time: 1 action
- Range: 120 feet
- Components: V, S, M (a caterpillar cocoon)
- Duration: Concentration, up to 1 hour
Description
Mass Polymorph is an advanced version of the Polymorph spell that allows you to transform multiple creatures at once into beasts of your choice. This spell is powerful in both combat and non-combat scenarios, allowing for extensive control over the battlefield or creative problem-solving.
Effects:
-
Targeting:
- You can target up to ten creatures within range.
- The targets can be willing or unwilling creatures.
- Unwilling creatures must make a Wisdom saving throw to avoid the transformation.
-
Transformation:
- Each target is transformed into a beast of your choice, with a challenge rating equal to or less than the target's level (or the target's CR, if the target doesn't have a level).
- The transformation lasts for the duration or until the target drops to 0 hit points or dies.
-
Game Statistics:
- The targets assume the hit points, physical statistics (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution), AC, movement modes, senses, and any other physical traits of the new form.
- Targets retain their mental ability scores (Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma), alignment, and personality.
- They can't cast spells, speak, or take any action requiring hands or speech unless their new form can do so.
- The targets' gear melds into their new forms and becomes nonfunctional.
-
Ending the Transformation:
- If a target drops to 0 hit points, it reverts to its original form, and any excess damage carries over to that form.
Strategic Applications:
-
Battlefield Control:
- Mass Polymorph is ideal for transforming a group of enemies into harmless creatures, significantly reducing the threat level on the battlefield. For example, turning a group of powerful warriors into sheep or chickens can render them harmless.
-
Buffing Allies:
- You can use Mass Polymorph to transform allies into powerful beasts, giving them access to increased hit points and new combat abilities. This is particularly useful for bolstering weaker allies or giving your party a temporary edge in combat.
-
Creative Problem-Solving:
- Outside of combat, Mass Polymorph can be used creatively to solve problems, such as turning your party into a flock of birds to quickly traverse a dangerous area or sneak into a secure location.
-
Escape and Evasion:
- The spell can be used to facilitate the escape of your party by turning them into inconspicuous or fast-moving animals, making it difficult for enemies to pursue.
Limitations:
-
Concentration:
- Mass Polymorph requires concentration, meaning the caster must maintain focus and avoid taking damage to keep the spell active. If concentration is broken, all targets revert to their original forms.
-
Duration:
- The spell lasts up to 1 hour, so its effects are temporary. Targets will eventually revert to their original forms unless they drop to 0 hit points first.
-
Mental Scores:
- Targets retain their original mental ability scores, which can be a disadvantage if they are transformed into creatures with low intelligence, wisdom, or charisma.
-
Saving Throws:
- Unwilling creatures can make a Wisdom saving throw to avoid the transformation. High-Wisdom creatures might resist the spell, reducing its effectiveness against certain foes.
Notes:
-
Roleplay and Thematic Use:
- Mass Polymorph is a spell with significant roleplay potential. It can be used in a variety of creative ways that align with your character's personality and goals, whether for mischief, strategy, or survival.
-
Synergy with Other Spells:
- The spell can be combined with other spells that benefit from controlling or protecting multiple creatures, such as Teleport or Wall of Force.
-
Ideal For:
- Mass Polymorph is a fantastic spell for wizards and sorcerers who want to exert control over large groups of creatures, either to disable enemies or enhance allies. It's also a great choice for characters who enjoy using⬤
Psychic Scream
- Level: 9th-level
- School: Enchantment
- Casting Time: 1 action
- Range: 90 feet
- Components: S
- Duration: Instantaneous
Description
Psychic Scream unleashes a powerful psychic blast that targets the minds of up to ten creatures within range, dealing massive psychic damage and potentially causing them to be stunned.
Effects:
-
Targets:
- Choose up to ten creatures within a 90-foot range that you can see.
-
Psychic Damage:
- Each target must make an Intelligence saving throw.
- On a failed save, a target takes 14d6 psychic damage and is stunned.
- On a successful save, a target takes half as much damage and is not stunned.
-
Stunning Effect:
- A target that fails its saving throw is stunned for the duration.
- Stunned creatures can make another Intelligence saving throw at the end of each of their turns to end the stun.
-
Secondary Effect:
- If a creature is reduced to 0 hit points by this spell, its head explodes, assuming it has one, killing it instantly.
Strategic Applications:
-
Mass Crowd Control:
- With the ability to target up to ten creatures, Psychic Scream is an extremely effective spell for controlling large groups of enemies, especially those with low Intelligence saving throws.
-
High Damage Output:
- The spell's 14d6 psychic damage can significantly weaken or even outright eliminate groups of enemies, particularly those vulnerable to psychic damage.
-
Ideal Against Low-Intelligence Enemies:
- Enemies with low Intelligence scores are more likely to fail their saving throws, making them prime targets for this spell.
Roleplaying Opportunities:
-
Terrifying Power:
- The visual effect of Psychic Scream can be portrayed as an overwhelming wave of psychic energy emanating from the caster, causing visible distortions in the air or creating eerie, silent screams that only the targets can hear.
-
Mind-Shattering Force:
- The aftermath of the spell can be gruesome, with heads of creatures that fail the saving throw and are reduced to 0 hit points exploding in a psychic burst.
-
Psychic Energy:
- Characters casting this spell might exhibit signs of intense mental strain or an aura of immense psychic power, as they channel the overwhelming force required to affect so many minds simultaneously.
Notes:
-
High-Level Spell:
- As a 9th-level spell, Psychic Scream is reserved for the most powerful spellcasters, and it can turn the tide of battle in a single action.
-
Intelligence Save:
- The effectiveness of this spell largely depends on the Intelligence saving throws of the targets, making it less reliable against creatures with high Intelligence or magic resistance.
-
Instantaneous Duration:
- The spell's effects occur instantly, but the stun can persist, providing ongoing control over affected enemies.
-
Ideal For:
- Wizards, sorcerers, and warlocks looking for a powerful, high-level spell that can control and damage multiple enemies at once, particularly in large-scale encounters or climactic battles.
