Soul Cage

Level: 6th
School: Necromancy
Casting Time: 1 reaction, which you take when a humanoid you can see within 60 feet of you dies
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S, M (a tiny silver cage worth 100 gp)
Duration: 8 hours

Description:

This spell snatches the soul of a humanoid as it dies and traps it inside the tiny silver cage used as the material component. You can use the trapped soul up to six times over the duration of the spell, choosing one of the following effects for each use:

  • Steal Life: You can use a bonus action to drain vigor from the soul and regain 2d8 hit points.
  • Query Soul: You can ask the soul a question (no action required), and receive a brief telepathic answer, which you can understand regardless of the language used.
  • Borrow Experience: You can use your reaction to gain advantage on one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. After you do so, the soul crumbles, and the spell ends.
  • Eyes of the Dead: You can use an action to name a place the soul saw in life. You receive a general description of the location, and for 10 minutes, you can see and hear from a point in that location as if you were there.

The spell ends when you have used the trapped soul six times, or when the 8-hour duration expires.

Notes:

  • Material Component: The tiny silver cage worth 100 gp is consumed when the spell is cast.
  • Versatility: The spell offers multiple uses, allowing you to heal, gain information, or enhance your abilities.
  • Duration: The spell’s effects last for 8 hours, providing ample time to make use of the trapped soul.
