Description

Investiture of Stone surrounds the caster with a magical aura of solid stone, granting several defensive and offensive benefits related to earth and stone.

Effects:

  • Resistance to Nonmagical Attacks:

    • You gain resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks for the duration of the spell.
  • Earth Glide:

    • You can move through solid earth or stone as if it were air, without disturbing the material you move through. This ability does not work on magical stone or structures.
  • Stone Strike:

    • As an action, you can cause a magical stone fist to erupt from a point you can see within 15 feet. The fist makes a melee spell attack against one creature within 5 feet of that point. On a hit, the target takes 2d10 bludgeoning damage and must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
  • Immovability:

    • You have advantage on saving throws against being moved or knocked prone.

Strategic Applications:

  • Damage Resistance: The resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks makes this spell an excellent choice for tanking and absorbing hits, especially in combat against creatures that rely on physical attacks.

  • Tactical Mobility: Earth Glide allows you to bypass walls and other obstacles made of earth or stone, giving you unique movement options for both offense and escape. It also provides opportunities for ambushes or repositioning.

  • Battlefield Control: The Stone Strike ability lets you knock enemies prone, making them vulnerable to melee attacks and slowing their movement. This can be particularly useful for disrupting enemy formations or protecting allies.

  • Defensive Play: The combination of damage resistance and advantage on saving throws against being moved or knocked prone makes Investiture of Stone a strong choice for defensive strategies, especially when holding a critical position.

Limitations:

  • Concentration: The spell requires concentration, meaning you’ll need to avoid taking damage or risk losing the spell’s effects.

  • Terrain Restrictions: The Earth Glide ability is limited to nonmagical earth and stone. It won’t work in areas where the ground is enchanted or made of other materials like metal or wood.

  • Close Range: The Stone Strike ability has a limited range of 15 feet, making it less effective against distant enemies.

  • Magic Attacks: The resistance provided by the spell does not apply to magical attacks, so it’s less effective against foes who wield magic or enchanted weapons.

Notes:

  • Roleplay and Flavor: This spell is thematic for characters with an affinity for earth or stone, such as an earth genasi, a druid of the mountains, or an elemental-focused wizard. The visual of the caster moving through solid rock or summoning stone fists adds to the flavor.

  • Synergy with Other Spells: Works well in combination with spells that manipulate earth or stone, such as Wall of Stone or Earthquake, creating a thematic and powerful earth-based strategy.

  • Ideal For: Sorcerers, wizards, and druids who need a mix of defense, mobility, and control in environments dominated by stone or earth. It's particularly effective in dungeons, caves, and mountainous terrain.
