Glyphs

Glyphs are an ancient way to conduct magic.

Not really tied to any specific language, Glyphs are based on the power of symbols.

Some symbols you can use as glyphs, as long as they are exotic to your culture.

Symbols carry great meaning in human history. Semiotics, or the study of symbols, is not just a magical or occult practice, it is a serious study of meaning and transmission of information. This mixture of science and art is the basis of language.

The relevance of this art, Semiotics, comes to Glyph magic as the transference of meaning, a deeper meaning that transcends species and languages in a magic realm. An Ancient communication from the realms of Chaos and Nature, glyphs are transmitters of primigenial forces. No need to be versed in magic, but in the flux of $Chaos$.

Both Semiotics and Magics have one key feature in common: They represent the will of the subject using it. They both change the world. They both have an effect around this subject, exerting the will of a person.

Language is, then, a form of Magic. When you read you are turning symbols chained together into sounds in your head (a sound we call language) and this language is but a reference to a reality beyond what we can express. Is a model of reality, and as such it is simplified. But it is also self-reflective, and as such, it can talk of things beyond reality. It can make you visualize a Chimera, a Dragon, or a Giant Serpent. It can build new realities. This is the essence of glyphs. Imposing this vision of the world into reality. Such is the nature of written language, as it makes this will impermanent, fixed, and constant. It builds a memory of this will that sustains itself in time. It is different from an Oath or a Spell in that you are not acting this will just at the present, but in a future too. It makes this will a fixed constant in time.

But language is not just ours to make, it should be interpreted too. A word is not a command if it is not received. In the case of glyphs, it is the forces beyond this world that listen and obey. It is a channel, an antenna, that transmits from the cacophony of chaos beyond our realms to the frequency of magic that you desire. The shapes of glyphs are then transcendent of humans, elves, dwarfs, or any creatures out there. They are built into the shapes of reality as light, electricity, or gravity are built into the shapes of our own world. And as electricity is an opening to awesome systems, gravity can be harnessed for its great power, and light itself is the ultimate source of all life on earth, these forces of elemental chaos can be directed, commanded, and subtly harnessed by magic users from these realms of fantasy.

Glyph magic is, or should be, an homage to the power of the written word and of symbols.

Runes

Runes are a subset in this semiotics world. They are the symbols used by a specific culture, may it be Dwarven, Elven, Human, or any other.

Runes are, by their nature, tied to a culture, a history, and a people. They always carry a vision shared, and a common understatement. They may express an individual's will, but in the context of its culture. They can be understood and added to the proper context. Someone should not just translate runes, but interpret them.
