Sleep

Characters and monsters need to sleep, and while doing so, they are subjected to the unconscious condition. Here are some expanded rules for sleep.

Waking Someone

A naturally sleeping creature wakes up if it takes damage or if someone uses an action to shake or slap it awake. Loud noises also wake a creature, but whispers only do so if the sleeper’s passive Wisdom (Perception) is 20 or higher and the whispers are within 10 feet.

Sleeping in Armor

Sleeping in light armor has no adverse effects. However, sleeping in medium or heavy armor hinders recovery. After such a rest, you regain only one-quarter of your spent Hit Dice (minimum of one die), and you do not reduce your exhaustion level.

Going Without a Long Rest

While a long rest is not mandatory, going without sleep has consequences. After 24 hours without a long rest, you must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion. The DC increases by 5 for each additional 24-hour period without a long rest, resetting to 10 after completing a long rest.
