Scarecrows

Scarecrows will scare away mobs, but not all mobs. A plain scarecrow will only scare zombies. You can create outfits for the scarecrow, each outfit will scare away different mobs. Once you place a scarecrow, if you break it you'll get a worthless armor stand back. So carefully consider where you're going to place it.

Wolf Outfit Protects against all Skeleton-like mobs.

Ocelot Outfit - Protects agaist all Creeper-like amd spider mobs.

Guardian Outfit - Protects agaist all Enderman-like mobs.

You'll need 4 scarecrows to protect against all kinds of vanilla mobs. Scarecrows do not protect against monsters.

More Dangerous

All hostile mobs are faster, stronger, and have more health. Zombies spawn in waves throughout the night, starting in lower numbers and increasing over time. Zombies and skeletons spawn with gear, which increases in durability over time. Additionally, zombies will start to spawn with weapons that do more damage. On day 3 they start to break down wooden doors and dirt to find you. All mobs have a chance to use certain items like ender pearls to get to you faster.

You're Not Safe

"I'm scared, i'll just hide on a tree" - that won't work :] hostile mobs have a chance to spawn parrots to get to you when they can't reach you by land. They also have a chance to spawn and ride guardians to get to you faster through water. You're not safe, anywhere. -evil laugh- My sympathies friend.

Stronger over time

As the days pass, all mobs will get stronger, faster, and have more health. Lycanites Mobs [the non-vanilla monsters] spawn in variants, and with varying levels. The higher the level, the stronger they are.

Did that horse take my Diamonds?

Yes, he did. Hostile mobs, and some friendly mobs will steal your items. If a horde of zombies gets into your base, you better hope your chest isn't sitting in the open. May I recommend using a lock box with a key to keep friends and mobs out of your stuff?
