Research Notes: Black Hole Mass Compilation Comparison

Overview

This document compiles and compares black hole mass measurements from two seminal papers:

  1. McConnell & Ma (2013) - "Revisiting the Scaling Relations of Black Hole Masses and Host Galaxy Properties" (arXiv:1211.2816v3)
  2. van den Bosch (2016) - "Unification of the Fundamental Plane and Super-Massive Black Hole Masses" (arXiv:1606.01246v2)

Data Sources & Parent Samples

McConnell & Ma (2013)

  • Base source: Online BH mass compilation at http://blackhole.berkeley.edu
  • Previous compilation: Updates Gultekin et al. (2009) which had 49 objects
  • New additions: 27 new BH mass measurements
  • Updates: 18 revised masses from improved data/modeling
  • Distance updates: 44 galaxies with revised distances (primarily SBF measurements from Tonry et al. 2001, Blakeslee et al. 2009/2010)
  • Sample size: 72 galaxies with dynamical BH mass measurements
  • Methods: Stellar dynamics (~42), gas dynamics (~15), water masers (~12)

van den Bosch (2016)

  • Base source: 97 galaxies from McConnell & Ma's online compilation
  • Additions from other compilations:
    • 4 from Gultekin et al. (2009a)
    • 4 from Kormendy & Ho (2013)
    • 15 from Saglia et al. (2016)
  • New/upated measurements (39 objects):
