Context

  • We wanted to track down the MASSIVE galaxies inside the GW catalogs I've been playing around with to assess the reliability of the stellar mass estimates. I've crossmatched the various catalogs (WISE2MBH, Zou, and Siudek) against Table 1 from MASSIVE I, and have some results below.
    • Note that the "MASSIVE" stellar masses I'm using are from the forumla in Emily's "Big Galaxies" paper (converting absolute K-band into stellar masses).
  • The punchline is that there's quite a large difference between the stellar masses coming from WISE2MBH/Zou vs. the K-band esimates using Emily's formula. More specifically I'm finding a mean difference of ~0.65 dex between MASSIVE and WISE2MBH, and ~1.1 dex offset comparing Zou to MASSIVE. In both cases the MASSIVE estimates are significantly higher than either WISE2MBH or Zou+22.
    • Only 3 of the MASSIVE galaxies made it in the Siudek value-added catalog, and showed below-average levels of disagreement, but were still quite offset from the MASSIVE stellar mass estimates.
Juggling all of the details for each catalog has gotten a bit overwhelming, so here are some notes on the different catalogs we've been looking at:
  • Zou DESI
    • 320,060,206 sources
    • Claims very similar standard deviations (~0.23) and outlier rates (~2%) to what I'm finding when comparing their results to both COSMOS and Chang (SDSS control sample that WISE2MBH also checks)
  • Siudek
    • 1,337,250 sources
    • About ~60% of these sources are successfully matched with the full Zou DESI catalog
  • WISE2MBH
    • 2,010,718 sources coming from the ETHER sampel (ngEHT targets)
    • Derives stellar masses essentially from WISE W1 luminosity + W2-W3 colors (correlation with M/L)
    • Claims agreement at the ~0.2 dex level with control samples from SDSS

Comparing with MASSIVE Galaxies

  • Here are three plots showing a 1-to-1 comparison of their stellar masses, as well as histograms of the differences between stellar mass esimates for the Zou/WISE2MBH/MASSIVE catalogs.

    • K: Apparent K-band magnitude of the galaxy. [TAKEN FROM MASSIVE I]
    • A_V: Extinction [TAKEN FROM MASSIVE I]
    • M_K: Absolute K-band magnitude of the galaxy. [TAKEN FROM MASSIVE I]
    • Separation_arcsec: Angular separation (in arcseconds) between MASSIVE coordinates and (matched) WISE2MBH coordinates *
    • Zou_sep_arcsec: Angular separation (in arcseconds) to the corresponding match in the Zou+ catalog.
      • This is largely irrelevant for this calculation but can help identify false matches. This separation is the separation between the Zou+22 coordinates and the Siudek+24 coordinates, which I had to compute in order to match specz values (again, which I'm not using here)
    • WISE2MBH_OBJECT_TYPE: Classification of the object in the WISE2MBH catalog (e.g., Galaxy, Star).
      • Can help double check my matching process.
    • MASSIVE_Mstar: Stellar mass estimate from the MASSIVE survey.
      • Computed from "Big Galaxies" paper formula
    • WISE2MBH_LOGSM: Stellar mass derived from WISE2MBH data.
    • Zou_MASS_BEST: Best-estimate stellar mass from the Zou+ catalog.
    • WISE2MBH_Z: Redshift of the galaxy from the WISE2MBH catalog.
    • Zou_photo_z: Photometric redshift from the Zou+ catalog.
    • Zou_photo_zerr: Uncertainty associated with the photometric redshift from the Zou+ catalog.

Additional Diagnostics/Exploratory Checking

  • I went down a bit of a rabbit hole trying to assess the DEIS vs. Siudek results, trying to be a bit more quantitative with the comparison here. As a quick reminder, I had implemented a number of cuts on the merged Zou/Siudek combined catalogs based on their paper quality flags. The result was a set of masses and redshifts that looked like this (with some helpful information in the titles):

  • I then took this clean sample and plotted out the difference in masses vs. differences in redshifts to see if there is any meaningful correlation here (with the idea being that higher differences in one should map to higher differences in the other). The results are these plots (identical, but right side is zoomed in):

  • I also have further cross-matched the VAC with the WISE catalog as best I can, so here's an update comparison of the Zou data vs. WISE, as well as Siudek vs. WISE:

  • We also wanted to quantify the agreement as a function of redshift, so I've extracted the 3-sigma-clipped standard deviation as a function of redshfit:
